Dean gave up his life and soul for his brother. The responsibility and love he felt for Castiel was so similar (and yet unique) to what he felt for Sam… It was the only way he could tell the angel: he loved him!
And it was not enough for Castiel. •

Castiel got hurt, played, betrayed and killed by his brothers. Brotherhood meant nothing to the Host when it came to orders and their own will. Dean thinking of him as a brother - it was like a slap int he face; like his feelings and sacrifices meant nothing. And if Dean didn’t reciprocate his love - then it was not enough.•
