I don't know if I agree with you about the stone. I interpreted it as "If you inhale the vapors, you MIGHT see visions, if you lay on the stone, you WILL become a soothsayer."
Like, when you're cooking, you can feel the steam escaping, but the heat and flavour is still inside the food. And that's my crappy analogy.
Leaving the reveal of the final Big Bad until close to the end seems to be a common theme in fiction -- the original Star Wars movies did it with the Emperor. But at least they also threw in a brief glimpse of him in the second movie... and you know, the Empire was actually EVIL and we saw evidence of it!
I honestly do not like Nasuada, so all these bits with her are just like "honestly, why should I care?" And the bit with the servant's nails was just weird. Why did we even need it?
The original Star Wars movies did it because the first movie was just going to be one movie. And then when that one took off they made the second one knowing the third one would be coming out so they could build up to it.
On the other hand, with Harry Potter, we saw Voldemort in almost every book. Book three I don't think he showed up beyond being talked about.
And yes, really, when you go around building something called the DEATH STAR you're probably evil.
As for the nails? I don't know. And I don't care either.
Nasuada: This place is terrible, I'm going try and survive, that guy has pretty fingernails.
Finally, we see the big bad of the series. Took about four books to do it. I honestly thought Paolini was gonna have Gabby in big, evil-looking armor, since Paolini and subtly aren't friends.
Been so long since I read that chapter so I can't remember the oracle stuff... from your recap it sounds a bit as if this was Galby's way of making a cruel joke that whoever gets tortured on that block is going to talk.

We aren't going to actually see what he looks like until the climax, will we?

if it is the stone, then my guess would be that sudden influx of heat that Nausada felt is the Soothsayer thing happening.
