Part Six:

Hotel California, sort of.Hah. It is to laugh. They’re going to California. To the School which is sort of like a hotel, but not. I’m not going to really bother with asking how they know of the title of the song ( Read more... )

Max and Nudge even managed to have a conversation. While flying. At ninety miles per hour. Because, you know, that’ll be heard easily.

You know, talking while running is hard to do. I have to wonder that flying at such a speed wouldn't require at least more effort than walking normally would. I mean it gets hand-waved in comics and probably other sci-fi/fantasy novels all the time but given that they ARE using wings, and he gave a precise speed, I can't help being a bit of a stickler about this too. It just seems stupid that 90MPH would be a fucking leisurely pace for them. They should be out of breath at some point.

Like, when we got there, we’d see a road paved with good intentions and have to cross the river Styx to get in.

Isn't that a mixed metaphor? I mean, the Greek/Roman underworld had the river Styx but I don't recall if it was specifically equated with Hell? (Well, other than Dante's Inferno but... you know what I mean.) It just sounds weird to me. o.o

Max starts thinking about setting down to find something to eat, when Nudge brings up some things she saw in Jeb’s files about her.

The man ran off with some of the School's classified files and they haven't, I don't know, leaked them somewhere? I realize they're supposedly in hiding and that's not a terrible way to introduce the idea of their parentage. But it just makes me wonder what else he took with him and if, you know, it could have been useful. I mean, trying to contact the government only to find they're in on it would've been interesting at least.

What she sees are two kids younger than her in a crate next to hers. They’re not very bright, as can be told from these thoughts and clearly rather … animalistic in how they look.

If they're younger than her... isn't she 6 years old or something? It might just be they're still learning how to talk (or, fuck, maybe they're not even American; could have been taken from nearby Mexico or even as far as South America or hell, maybe China!) But no, sadly you're probably right and our cute little flock and Ari are just special for still being able to talk.

Now I really want to write the germ of a story idea these reviews have given me, where this ugly kid gets transformed into a bird/human. Because he looks ugly, is blind (therefore doesn't look directly at people when they talk to him), is kind of clumsy (because he now has wings for arms and has to use his newly bird-like feet for hands), and constantly sounds confused (because he questions what people are saying to him) people automatically assume he's just not very bright when he's actually perfectly intelligent. Oh, and the other bird/human experiment turns out, much to his surprise, to be a REAL harpy that was being held captive... and she was assuming all along that he was just a harpy from a tribe she'd never met. And him? He was actually just grateful to be alive because his grandma had died in the war/battle he was in (he was on the losing side), leaving him an orphan. Surprisingly cheerful fellow until he gets his vision back and sees how bizarre and awkward he now looks (he knew he'd been changed but... seeing yourself for what seems like the first time is still seeing yourself for the first time.) Then his new friend Lenore the harpy cheers him up... "Nevermore!" :I

In any case it seems like the reason why they wanted Angel back was because they wanted to cut up here BRAAAAIN and see how she’s psychic.

It gets better, if my skimming manga volume 3 is any indication. The scientists put her in a huge maze and electrocute her whenever she stops running. And she still has her wings. I can't wait to see how Patterson tries to explain that and what the hell they expect to learn from it (or the lack of him trying anyway.)
