Notes the second So... what is the other side thinking about Eragon. In a rational world.
It started before Fienster. Long before it.
There was that patrol that no one came back from. An entire regiment of soldiers out protecting their lands and they were all killed in massive horrible ways. One boy? He had his neck snapped and left like a forgotten sack of potatoes in the plains. Another had a hole in his chest, straight through his armor.
Only elves could do it. The rumors said. Only the Dragon Rider could do it they then said. He was called the Dragon Rider because people feared to say his name. If they did, he might hear them and bring doom upon them and their families.
A man saw a blue dragon over the lake in Helgrind fighting a horrible creature. Great and horrible smoke belched from the mountain afterwards. The only survivor? A man. A wanderer.
The Dragon Rider, he said, forced him to the elves. Forced him to walk blind and broken to the elves. He could not stop, he could not rest. He could never see his daughter, his only thing he cared for in this world, again. He almost drowned in rivers he couldn’t see. Stumbled and fallen across cliffs unknown. His only grace? Animals who fed him.
Then he would laugh.
No one could stand to hear it.
It was a laugh of a mad man. Crackling and hissing with pain of enforced solitude and movement.
Mercy Dragon Rider?
He had none.
All of this reached Fienster as swift as wind.
The Varden were also coming. The rumors here were more salacious and while perhaps filled with fact also unbelievable.
One man killing two hundred with merely a hammer? (Surely that number had to be exaggerated.)
Entire villages taken, destroyed, and their goods not even stolen? Were they mad? Were they savages? Urgals willingly worked with them.
They must be.
Look what they did to the villages outside the city. They burned, sending plumes of smoke and ash to choke Fienster’s people. Lady Lorana told them to hold strong.
But then the Dragon Rider came.
No mercy.
No honor.
No choice.
His side or die.
Blood flowed from his sword as he savagely swept through the city killing and hunting down every one in his wake. Never disable. Always kill. His dragon monster dismembering and disemboweling anyone in its path.
The captain of the guard - people whispered- was killed without provocation. The Dragon Rider struck without even being attacked.
He would be their liberator from a peaceful existence living under the rule of their caring Lady? Over a hundred years of quiet living and they needed to be liberated from that?
Surely that rumor must be spread by drunks or Varden propagandists.
For in no way could it be true.
