I have decided to try and create a role-playing game based in my world. I've got the races and classes listed. And since three out of the four races are magical users, I've decided to restrict the magical classes in what they can take. Or at least their magical progression. They have a class that allows them to further explore their abilities, but unless they take that class they'll stay rather low powered because they didn't have the training that those who were dedicated to their magic would.
The races are:
Humans: The non-magical folk. They're the ones with the biggest class choices. They'll get some other special perks which I don't know yet.
Wizards: They can manipulate one of four elements (or four, depending on when the campaign takes place). They're restricted in what classes they can take, but they get a magical power bonus, probably an offensive power or something. It's likely that they'll uses magic instead of weapons to defend themselves if they focus solely on magic. Also, if they don't take their racial class they won't be able to expand their ability to use their magical abilities.
Witches: They can manipulate life magic. Growing and healing things as well as communing with animals. They too will be restricted in what classes they can take. But they'll have two focus options which will decide what sort of magical "feats" and classes they can take.
Angels: Can fly and teleport short distances. However they're foreigners, from another continent, and will suffer a penalty when dealing with other people. New folks are not welcomed. Who knows what they'll do? And once again, they too will be class restricted.
Now, I'm not class restricting races because that'll give them too many bonuses, but because of societal reasons. Only humans, for example, can be a Knight of Lorac or a Seriph (priest) of Lorac because Wizards believe that Lorac was a total loony and not a god and witches -in this particular case- feel the same way as the wizards. As for angels, it's not a religion that's apart of their culture.
Classes then are as follows:
Racial Classes
Wizard: Air focus, Earth Focus, Fire focus, Water focus
Witch -Range focus and Witch -healer focus.
Human: Knight of Lorac, Seriph of Lorac and Noble.
Unrestricted classes
Bard: Has diplomatic immunity
Scout: A ranger like class for non-witches, with different bonuses
Herbalist: A healer who uses herbs and first aid as opposed to magic to heal
Warrior/Fighter: Someone who's really good at killing stuff. =D
I still need to work out the actual benifits, skills, feats, monsters, NPC races and combat. I think combat will be the most difficult.
