"Are you ready, sweet stuff? We gotta get goin' if we want to-" Kip stopped at the bedroom door, a frown creasing his brow. "Bran, what-"
"Nothing fits, Christopher!" Brandon spun around with three pairs of pants in his hands, his eyes shining and his lower lip sticking out. Around him, the bedroom looked like it had been the focal point of several tornadoes, at best. Clothes covered the bed and floor in colorful and messy mounds, practically all of Brandon's clothes, both the boy and the girl ones. "None of my pants or skirts fit!"
Kip gaped. In the five years they had been together, Brandon's weight had never fluctuated so much as a pound, and now his clothes did not fit? He entered the bedroom and approached Brandon, pushing clothes aside with his new green sneakers. "What do you mean nothing fits?" He placed his hands on Brandon's slim hips and met his boy's wet eyes.
Brandon dropped the clothes in his hands and leaned on Kip's chest. "Nothing! I'm fat!" he said in an exasperated tone.
Kip chuckled softly and kissed Brandon's forehead. "You're not fat, baby; that's a cosmic impossibility." He rubbed his thumbs in small circles over Brandon's hipbones. "Maybe it all just shrunk? Shit like that happens all the time."
"To all of my clothes? Including the ones I haven't touched in months?" Brandon sighed dramatically and shook his head. "No. I'm getting fat. Soon I won't be able to see my own toes, and you'll stop lov-"
"Don't you dare finishing that sentence," Kip said sternly, touching Brandon's chin and tilting his head back so their eyes could meet again. After a peck to Brandon's soft lips, his voice came out softer. "Ya know I'm not going anywhere. Now, lemme have a look, hm?" He dropped to one knee and studied Brandon's abdomen, smoothing a hand over it at first and then planting a lingering kiss just below the cute little navel. It did seem like there was a little bit of belly there, where there never used to be one. It felt slightly warmer than the rest of Brandon, too.
"See?" Brandon's voice sounded almost defiant, but he sniffled once as he looked down at Kip.
Kip swallowed. Something was wrong. He pretended he was not worried, however, and smiled up at Brandon. "So you've gained a few pounds. Bran, that's-"
"Not all," Brandon cut in. "I've been getting dizzy, and I've thrown up almost every morning this week."
"What?" Kip was up in a flash, his back be damned. He held Brandon as if the younger man would collapse on him in the next two seconds. "Why didn't you tell me?"
"I didn't want to worry you." Another sniffle. "What's wrong with me?"
"We're gonna find out, sweet stuff." Kip gathered Brandon close and kissed the top of his head. "I promise."
…
"Pregnant?"
Lex nodded. "I'm sure of it. The symptoms match the ones I felt when-"
"Pregnant?" repeated Kip, his jaw dropping comically. "He can't be pregnant; he's a guy! I mean, have you seen the size of his-"
"The size of a man's penis is hardly a pregnancy deterrent, Kip," Lex replied calmly. "Trust me, I know."
"But how?"
"Same way I got pregnant. Zatanna."
"Who?"
"Brandon told me that a dark-haired woman wearing a top hat spoke to him about a month ago as he was waiting for you at your usual bench at the park. She got him thinking about what he wanted most in life, and well, it was to give you a family, a real one. Now you're going to have one."
Kip exhaled heavily through his lips. "This is crazy. And you're sure it's real?"
"It's real. The baby inside him is real, and it'll remain real until he doesn't want it to be, which I find unlikely. After it's born…"
"After it's born, what?"
Lex took a deep breath and touched Kip's shoulder. "After it's born, there'll be no unwishing it."
A couple of seconds of staring into Lex's eyes, Kip nodded. The man should know; he had been through it twice now, and had two beautiful children to show for it. "Okay."
"You'll have to be very supportive of him," Lex warned gently. "He's pretty scared right now."
Kip nodded again. "I will be. I love him."
…
When Brandon approached the threshold and gave Kip an unsure look, Kip ran to him and just held him tightly, kissing him and telling him it was going to be all right.
When Brandon cried for no reason at all in the upcoming weeks and months, Kip picked him up, carried him to bed, and kissed and rocked him until Brandon was happy again.
Whenever Brandon woke up with a strange craving, Kip got up, got dressed, and went to get his little guy whatever he wanted.
When Kip felt tired or when his back hurt, Brandon gave him a massage and let Kip nap with his head on Brandon's expanding belly. That made Kip feel instantly better.
They picked every detail of the baby's room together. Once it was exactly the way they had dreamed, they found out that Brandon was expecting twins.
Kip was silent for two minutes and then he kissed Brandon until neither of them could breathe.
Brandon was on bed rest for the final month and a half of his pregnancy, but he was good and he did not complain. Every time he felt like whining, he ran his hands over his belly, felt the babies kicking in there, and he smiled and forgot all about what had been bothering him.
Brandon's cesarean went without a hitch. It was a Tuesday and it rained heavily outside, but for both Brandon and Kip, it would forever be the most beautiful day of their lives.
…
Kip blinked himself awake and jerked his head up. He had dreamed the weirdest thing…
"Have a good nap, baby?"
"Hmm, yeah. Had a strange dream."
"Ooh, tell me! Was I naked?"
Kip sat up, shook his head, and picked up the baby closest to him. "No, you weren't. Hey, there, beautiful thing. Were you napping, too?" He ducked his head and kissed his daughter's tiny nose. She cooed at him and his heart swelled up all over again, just like the first time he had seen her, just like every time he saw Brandon and the babies.
"So what did you dream of?" Brandon asked as he gently rubbed their baby boy's back. Naptime was probably Brandon's favorite time of the day, when the four of them would snuggle together and just be warm, together and happy.
"I dreamed that I was pregnant."
Brandon laughed softly. "Yeah, wouldn't that be weird?"
Kip chuckled. "I think we're good with two, don't you?"
"Well…" Brandon handed Kip their son and got up to prepare their bottles. "If you come across a beautiful brunette wearing a top hat, just don't wish for a bigger family!"
