Japanese Breakfast

How to buy breakfast: Stroll down the street looking at all the pictures of food in front of the restaurants until you get to the ¥350 breakfast place recommended by the ryokan host.

Apologize and thank kind-hearted staff who explain how to use a machine, like the ones all over the streets selling soda and beer, to select and pay for your breakfast. Pick the picture of the breakfast you want, put the correct money in the correct slot. Gaijin succeeds as waitress politely hides smile. She was a little worried that I had selected breakfast that included nattou, sticky fermented soybeans. Raw eggs seem to be ubiquitous; I dumped mine in the miso soup to poach it a bit. A bit of rice, seaweed, dark green veggie, green tea, and I'm good to go for the day!
