008 I am you and you are me

[A: Open to All; wandering around Bombfield.]

[Cain had tried desperately to keep his eyes open, the endurance of a clone and the fearful adrenaline from the situation helping with that. But at the end of the day, he was still only a ten year old child and he couldn't stay awake for days on end. Eventually, as morning crept over for the third day ( Read more... )

[Everybody's dying. Everybody's falling around Clark and he can't stop it. Nobody can.

He's left Tim to rest on the reminders of a bed he's found. He's just walking around, looking for any survivors he might find. there must be somebody- he refuses to believe he's been left alone yet again. So Abel and Cain cannot possibly imagine the relief it means for him to find them.]

Guys...

[ahh... he isn't the only one intensely relieved... Abel's arms nearly go lax as it hits him with suddenness at the fruition of his search, but he's stubbornly holding onto that little boy for all he's worth. it's-- he's reached Clark Kent. Kent is alive; he's safe, and that's... all that matters.

maybe he had failed, but he hadn't lost everything. Cain was strong, and... Clark was a good man, so--]

Clark! ...are you-- alright? [he has to make sure he's... that he can take him, keep him safe. he would, right? he... he definitely would.]

[No.

No no no no NO!

If they had found Clark, that meant that Abel was actually going to... He was going to hand him off and leave him behind. He was going to--

His fingers tighten like steel in Abel's clothes, all pretences of maturity gone as he buries his head in his brother's chest, half fiercely and half pleadingly.]

I am-

[Not alright. Not by one bit and he wishes this was just a nightmare and he'd wake up and laugh at himself and tell Lois the next morning and she'd laugh at him too.

And everything would be over. But that's not what Abel is asking.]

-fine. Are you alright, guys? [He glances at Cain... so unlike him to hide, or to not even say anything to him.]

[Clark doesn't look fine-- haggard, for sure. he's certain he's succumbing to the radiation, as well -- God, the thought has fear coiling in his stomach anew. would anyone make it through this alive? could they... even outlast this? was Mayfield intending to slowly... kill them off, one by one, until there was no one and nothing left...

his fingers twitch where he's holding his brother, and he shakes his head in response. he has to hold out hope that Clark would be able to watch over Cain until this... nightmare was over.]

...I'm... sorry-- to ask this of you, but you're the only person I would trust with...

[his look is imploring, guilty-- strained and more than slightly desperate. he's trying to gently but firmly disentangle the boy from where Cain is clinging like his life depended on it.]

I have-- to go. For just... a little while, okay? And I know you're a good man-- [please let go, Cain, damnit--]

N...No...

[Abel might be older, but Cain has the advantage of strength at the moment and there is no way he's letting go. His fingers wind into Abel's shirt and his legs scissor around his brother's waist to lock behind him... they're going to have to literally drag him off.]

Don't... please, please Abel. Please. Don't go, don't... die. Don't leave me all alone.

...Abel, you know I'd do anything for you. For him... but he obviously doesn't want that.

Are you sure this the best for him?

[Even though the thought of leaving them alone, leaving a kid to see how his brother dies when they are so obviously tied together...]

[he's not... sure of anything. but what else can he do but... this? could he really let his brother watch, as he just...

...

maybe if he were a better man, all of the answers would be clear and the right thing to do so simple to see, to see through. but he isn't, and -it- isn't. he's scared. he's scared, and he doesn't want Cain to see... any of it.

he stumbles a clumsy step as Cain latches, and he gives him a conflicted look. it's obvious this is not exactly easy for him, either.]

He's... my brother. I promised to protect him. [and barring his ability to protect him himself, Clark taking him was the best option. he had to believe that.]

...I have to go. You... you have to let go, Cain.

I won't, I won't ever let go!

[He is half mad with grief already. He can see Abel is dying, he can almost feel him slipping away minute by minute... it's the single most terrifying thing that's ever happened.

He doesn't care if they kill the rest of the town, if they have cannibals feast on their flesh while they're still breathing, just don't... don't ever take his brother.]

Never. Never! You can't DIE!

[Clark is always the last one to lose hope. He's stubborn, headstrong and fights until the very end. Which means that for him, this isn't the end. He isn't just leaving Abel to die.

He's saying 'I'll see you later'.]

You'll come back for him, won't you? W-when- when this is all over. When you feel better.

[He's still not reaching for Cain, but he can tell he'll have to literally pull him away from Abel himself.]

[...Clark, you... are the broest bro to ever bro ;(

Abel gives him a mutedly surprised look over the terrible pang in his chest at his brother's words; he's trying so hard to ignore the pain in that small voice. he's only ten... this is-- hell on earth, and he was never supposed to see this.

they were never supposed to lose each other, this time.

he squeezes Cain in as tight a hug as he can possibly manage, before rubbing at his face with a dirtied sleeve of his shirt. he's not being a woobie shut up he got dust in his eyes.]

...Of course! I always... come back, you know. Annoying persistence... it's one of my many endearing qualities...

[please take him. it's hard enough to think, and seeing his brother this way... it's breaking his heart, making his knees jelly. he's trying to gently tug at him, but even at ten-- a clone's strength would surpass his own at his best. sob, Cain, why.]

[These stupid jokes? These veiled ways for people to politely say goodbye in death? They were pointless, everything was POINTLESS!

How could Clark be agreeing to take him away? Couldn't he see that Cain's place was beside his brother? No matter what happened, even if... he actually... died. Cain would be there, holding his hand, with him.

They weren't meant to be apart.

How could he survive as just half a soul? How could Abel have forgotten their bond so easily? He's furious and terrified, his fist lashing out to slam into Abel's cheek to dish out his first ever punch.]

Don't you DARE leave me behind! We're.... we're one, Abel, we're... don't die, if you die I'll-- I'll... I'll bite off my tongue, we won't...

[...won't be apart. What did pretences matter now?]

Please don't leave me.

[He doesn't even dare talk. Doesn't dare move for a few seconds until Cain threatens to die himself, and he's glad he doesn't have superhearing anymore because he's pretty sure he wouldn't like what he said.

He looks up at Abel as he slowly, but in a determined way pulls Cain's arms away from him. He's still a muscular and strong farmboy.

'Is this really what you want?' is asked without even talking. But after seeing this he's pretty sure Cain couldn't deal with Abel dying in front of him.]

[if Cain was alone with him, he -knows- Cain wouldn't make it until the end of this god damn... hellish nightmare, and that's something he just can't allow.

his own weakness will not be Cain's undoing.

--that fist... catches him by complete surprise. it's the only time he's... ever seen his brother raise a hand against anyone, nevermind... him, and it's lucky that Clark was reaching out to pluck Cain off because Abel's oh-so-gracefully stumbling backward a step, which assists in prying the boy loose.

ooh... he rubs his cheek dumbly, looking more than slightly dazed up at his brother and Clark. fuzzy shapes... fuzzy. his head hurts.]

...D... don't... say that, you...

[you-- C... Cain. you wouldn't-- do that. he's gone terribly pale at the prospect.]

I'm... coming back for you. So-- don't... don't you dare say that!

[D: Clark. you wouldn't let him. Clark definitely wouldn't let anything happen to Cain...]

[He's never struck anyone before, and he had never intended to in the future, but... What did his morals and plans and patience matter, without the meaning of them all there beside him?

As soon as Clark is prying him free of Abel, he's fighting like a wildcat against the huge muscled man. Heedless of if he hurts the man he had come to call friend, tears are pouring down his face as his eyes burned intensely into his brother's face.]

If... if you thought you were coming back, you wouldn't leave me in the first place!

[He's not an idiot, he knows what this means. It's... goodbye, and it's not a word he will tolerate, even unspoken, coming from his brother.]

I'll know, I swear... I'll know, and if you die, I'll kill myself.

[It's a promise, not a threat, he can't live without his brother. So don't go, don't leave him behind and doom them both.]
