G-d, I fucking hate American Television.

So.
Now, in addition to fucking up Coupling, Viva Blackpool, and (to a much lesser extent but still not nearly as good as the original) Office, in addition to the fact that they are fucking up Spaced, now, oh now, American TV is going to fuck up Life on Mars.
Can I tell you how awesome Life on Mars is? No, I can't, because it's so fucking awesome it defies description. The only comparison I have is Donna Noble, who is awesomeness personified, and on another British show.
Gah, this makes me so angry. It's like, really, TV? Really? YOu want to try this again? Did you learn nothing from Coupling? Nothing at all? Or from Viva Lauglin, based on the fantatstic Viva Blackpool?
Ok, tv. Meet me at the interwebs.
Hello.
Here's the thing: I know that you're tired. You've been through a lot the last couple of weeks, what with threats of yet another strike. And I know that it hasn't been easy to just get back in the swing of things after the writers strike a few months ago. And I know that viewers have been watching tv on the internet, and watching more dvds, and things are changing and it's scary. I know it's scary. It's always scary when things change. But change doesn't have to be bad. No, it really doesn't. Why, look at How I Met Your Mother! They have bonus video, a blog by a character, even behind the scenes! And they do very well. They embrace their on-line content.
No, you're right, I'm sorry, I shouldn't compare the rest of TV to HIMYM, I'll stop, I promise. Here's the thing, TV: Copying from your British cousins Is Not Cool. I know that things are scary right now, but just because something worked for our British Cousins does not give you the excuse to make a US re-make. First of all, they have a very different writing schedule, usually only lasting thirteen episodes. Secondly, the series is usally finite, unlike American series. Life on Mars ends. It just does. Viva Blackpool had an ending. American television is meant to go on indefinately. THirdly, and I don't want you take this the wrong way...British TV is just more sophisticated.
Now, don't look at me like that, you know it's true. British tv is much more comfotable with moral ambiguities. The only real ambiguity you get is on pay tv, like Dexter or the Sopranos. American broadcast tv doesn't seem to be ready for a hero who cheats on his wife, is an alcholic, has a teen daughter marrying a 45 year old, and a gay son who killed someone and gets off scot free. And I can understand that. But, if you're not ready, don't look for inspiration from a country that is ready. Focus on yourself first, American TV.
And don't worry. I'm sure you'll get hter.
