Why did I wait so long to get MGMT's Oracular Spectacular? I'm in love with "Time to Pretend," "Electric Feel" and "Kids." That and Antony and the Johnson's two albums that I have bought will be in heavy rotation.
I haven't posted in over a month, so I should probably give a bit of an update on my life.
My conversion process has been going well. I got a lot of Jewish-themed presents for Chrismakkuh, and everyone's been great about it. Leigh, the crafty little lesbian that she is :P, fashioned me a stuffed dreidel! It's pretty sweet. My aunt got me a mezuzah necklace and I've also gotten a few books. Got a lot of nice clothes, and I now have a Garmin... so no more getting lost in scary backwoods Ohio. I can even get it to talk to me in German or Spanish... or one of the about 100 different languages it has loaded on it. It's pretty sweet.
The only thing wrong with Christmas was that it was only my immediate family, my aunt Dee Dee and Leigh... my other aunt's family and my grandparents were in a tiff and I'm not going to get into it on here, but it's pretty lame. Besides those absences, though, Christmas Eve dinner was very nice, and we even played Cranium after (Leigh and I are Team JewGay). Christmas with my dad's side of the family was also fun; everyone was there, and the kids are growing up so fast... I remember when some of the were born! It's crazy. We went to see Slumdog Millionaire(as my dad's family has watched a movie on Christmas Day since the 60s), and I enjoyed the movie, even though it seems like the buzz is making it out to be the best film of 2008, which I just don't think it is. Speaking of films, I've been watching a lot of foreign films while I was home, including Km.0, Sophie Scholl, Das Leben Der Anderen, and a few others. There Blockbuster deal that allows you to have two movies out for as long as you like for a set fee, but you can return and rent as many as you would like has been awesome for dinner and a movie at home.
Staying busy with the movies was great for me during this trip. Maybe once my family has irritated me this trip, and I think it's a record, which is not to say that it's their fault, but I think both they and I tried harder to stay busy and give stuff that both of us like to do. A perfect example would be the trip from Las Vegas that I came back from yesterday. I thought going in "Great, two 4-5 hour car rides with my parents and then two nights with them in Las Vegas." I was surprised that I had so much fun with them... it was very nice to sit down and play black jack with my father, and having him give me advice on what to do (I got it down pretty well by the end of the trip); sure I lost money, but I had a lot of fun... and isn't that the point? I look at the money as more of paying for the entertainment; I'd definitely go back. (Can you tell I love semicolons?)
In other Jewish news, I spent tonight at one of my parents' wine club members' house. The couple had us over for Shabbat dinner, and two other couples came too. The wife had just had her bat mitzvah about a year ago after converting nine years before that, so she's been really generous in giving me info, books and generally being really supportive and eager about my conversion. I don't think I'm going to go through the bar mitzvah until after school, so I have a bit more time for all the study it requires; I don't want to overburden myself.
I fly back to Cleveland tomorrow, and I'm feeling good about returning, even though Sallie Mae is trying to fuck up my loan as much as possible so that I can't sign up for classes... yeah, it's absurd. They start on Monday! I think I'm just going to have to go to all of my classes and just hope they don't fill up before I get my shit figured out. It's stressful, but I'm just trying not to think about it until I get back.
That's about all I have for now, I'm sure I'll come up with other stuff to add later, but I'm going to try to use this more often, so that I keep my writing juices flowing.
