Mark and I went to a movie. A movie! We have rarely ever done this. I think the last movie we went to was the Bond a few years ago or maybe it was the last Star Wars flick. It's been so long I can't remember. It was fun to get out alone together and go on a date. I paid for the movie and he paid for the snacks. We made cracks about scenes at the same time since we were pretty much the only ppl in the theatre. We even held hands during the film or he had his hand on my leg. It was all very sweet. Awwwwww.
We are both huge Bond fans...thanks to
catdragon_ I now own the entire Bond collection which we usually watch every Sunday. So we were pretty excited about the new flick "Quantum of Solace". With the holidays and me stressing over work issues in the past month, we hadn't had the chance to see it when invited by friends, so Mark suggested we go the other night.
To begin with...it was good for an action movie. It was non-stop adrenaline from beginning to end. Lots of great car chases and fight scenes...a menacing bad guy...the beautiful girls...atypical locations around the world etc etc. In other words, it had the make-up of a typical Bond movie, but in the end...it fell flat for me.
Daniel Craig is yummy, but his character was not given any snappy lines or snipey comebacks. This Bond is VERY serious. There was no cheekiness with M. There were no cheezy pick up lines with the girls. I think I recall ONE...just one...slick comment during the whole film. I'm sure other people may not like these lines...but...to me THAT IS BOND. Even the best Bond (imho) Sean Connery, made little retorts while still maintaining his more serious spy side. I missed the double entendres, though some Bonds have gone over the top and there were too many. Balance baby...all about the balance. One? That was just cruel.
And where the hell was Q? I was so sad that Desmond Llewelyn passed away and was no longer in them, but was satisfied with the replacement of John Cleese. Who doesn't love John Cleese? Sooooo where was he, dammit? There was no quirky boyish scene with Q but instead there was a very obvious lack of gadgets. Bond without gadgets? It's like going to see a romantic film and no one kisses or falls in love. Major fail whoever wrote this latest in the Bond series.
Again...I enjoyed the film...but I enjoy most shoot-em-up, high-action films in which even though there may be violence, there is no visible gore and grossness. This could have been any Bruce Willis, Tom Cruise (Boo hiss), Arnold Scwartzennwhatever action flick. So although I was entertained...I still want my Bond.
Please bring him back.
