Doctor Who Fans, I Need Your Expertise

I recently stumbled across the latest Doctor Who episode, "Twice Upon a Time," as one of the holiday eps I can watch on Amazon. Since I haven't watched the show since Sylvester McCoy was the Doctor, I thought I'd give this new generation a try. I must admit I'm also curious because I heard about the new, very first female Doctor coming up, and ( Read more... )

You can find most of the seasons in streaming media, and/or get them from your local library. Or actually, I will never watch the DVDs again, I could send them to you?

You're probably right about the streaming, but I told my husband about your offer, and he is never one to turn down free gifts. :)

I'll PM you my address, and thank you so much for this.

How exciting! :D
Other Christmas eps are: Voyage of the Damned (both me and B love this one), and End of Time Pt I and II (B likes this one, I don't), The Christmas Invasion (this is the first of the new generation and is where we are introduced to Nine (Christopher Eccleston), and last but not least The Runaway Bride (I like this one because it's where we meet Donna for the first time.)

Ten (David Tennant) is my favourite doctor, especially when he has Donna as his companion - I'm not a fan of the Martha eps.
But, Eleven is fabulous too, especially when he's with Amy and Rory.

Thanks. They do seem to go all out on the Christmas ones, don't they?

It's also helpful to get some advice on the good companions as well as the Doctors, so thanks for that, too.

Actually, I think you'd really love Martha (although, I love Donna a lot, too)

I adored Matt Smith's entire run, although I did love Amy & Rory as companions over Clara (never did quite warm to her, although I did like Clara better with Peter Capaldi's Doctor)

Oh, and if you do watch any of Peter's run, you should watch all of Bill's episodes - because Bill is just a brilliant companion

I just finished the season with Martha. She was alright. It was really nice to see a black female companion, and the whole season was an interesting exploration of unrequited love. I'm not used to there being such intense romantic/sexual/soulmate subtext between the Doctor and his companions (or maybe I'm just not remembering the classic episodes well), so Rose Tyler and Martha Jones have been a learning experience.

I saw Bill in "Twice Upon a Time," and that alone makes me curious to know more about her! :)

For me, the Ecclestone and Tennant (Doctors 9 & 10) years were the absolute classic years. Pretty much every episode and Christmas special was spot on. It was almost like the classic early days of Supernatural with the 'simple and entertaining monster of the week' episodes.

I loved Matt Smith as the doctor, but for me, the story arc and timeline started getting overly complicated at that point, and by the Peter Capaldi years, I had just completely lost the plot, couldn't connect with the assistants and supporting characters, and drifted away from the show.

That's not to say that you wouldn't enjoy it, those are only my opinions. For the record, I watched this year's Christmas special when Peter Capaldi regenerates into Jodie Whitaker, our new lady doctor, and I really enjoyed it - I want to start watching the show again because I really want to support her.

All shows are like that, aren't they? They start out simple and straightforward, then the plot tries to build upon itself and sometimes it works, but usually it just ends up getting muddled. Oh, well.

I think I would jump into this season with the new female Doctor even if I knew nothing about the NextGen series, just out of sheer curiosity. But as it turns out, I'll come into it now with some appreciation for the reboot as a whole.

I agree with everything Dizzo said - I liked Christopher Ecclestone, loved David Tennant and liked Matt Smith but couldn't get on with the last one.

I don't really think you need to watch all of them to enjoy the next season, but if I had to choose one to recommend, it would be David Tennant as the Doctor. He's sweet, funny, a little weird and easy on the eye!
