This fic is in response to this prompt on KMM1: Merlin/Lancelot, gratitude.

603 words.

It started out as nothing more than a handshake.

Merlin did something to help Lancelot - defeat a bandit here, magically charge a weapon there - and they’d shake hands in thanks. Lancelot did something for Merlin - looked away as the bandit was dispatched here, pretended his weapon had always been that awesome there - and they’d shake hands in thanks.

It became hugs pretty quickly; it wasn’t just a ‘thanks for helping me’ anymore. Now it was, ‘thanks for being there when I need you.’

Merlin couldn’t exactly say when it changed. Just that it did. He began seeking ways to help Lancelot, enough that it was pulling him away from his work. And if Lancelot spent more time in Camelot than he was supposed to? Well, Merlin certainly didn’t mind.

The first time Merlin kissed Lancelot in thanks, it was just a peck on the cheek alongside the hug.

“Thank you so much for helping me deal with the Sphynx,” Merlin had said, wrapping his arms around Lancelot and pressing a kiss to his cheek.

“It’s no problem, Merlin,” Lancelot had replied, flushing but happy.

From there, the need for help seemed to double. Merlin would find himself called on more, find Lancelot helping him with lesser tasks.

It didn’t take a genius to work out what was what.

“Lancelot! Just the man I need,” Merlin said one day, hugging the other man without prompting. “I’ve got a problem. I was hoping you could help?”

“Yes, of course,” Lancelot replied, the same smile he always wore these days creeping onto his face. “What’s the problem?”

“It... It’s a bit sensitive. Could we... walk somewhere a bit private?”

“Of course,” Lancelot said. It wasn’t an unusual request, but Merlin knew that this chat would be plenty different from usual.

“What is it?” Lancelot asked when they were finally somewhere secluded.

“It’s... a problem with my love life, actually,” Merlin began, softly, searching Lancelot’s eyes.

“Oh,” Lancelot said, mouth tightening fractionally. Merlin didn’t miss it, though, because that’s what he’d been hoping for. “How can I help?”

“Actually... I was hoping you could... thank me?” Merlin suggested, hoping Lancelot caught his meaning.

“What?” Lancelot asked, confused.

“You know... we help each other out... one of us kisses the other’s cheek... I was thinking you could, er, maybe aim for my mouth, next time?”

“Merlin?” Lancelot asked, confusion turning to hope. “Is that the... the problem?”

“Yeah, it is,” Merlin said, nodding. “Kind of been hoping you’d slip, and I’m running out of fake things to ask for your help with.”

“Fake thi- Merlin!” Lancelot actually laughed at him. “Have you been coming up with fake monsters for us to defeat?”

“They’re not fake!” Merlin protested in a perfectly manly, completely non-sulky way. “I just... have to go out of my way to tempt them to Camelot, is all.”

“Oh! You’re an idiot! Hey, no - we’re both idiots,” Lancelot said, laughing. His laughed became deeper when he saw Merlin’s raised brow. “What? You didn’t seriously think I needed fifty enchanted swords, did you?”

Merlin flushed. Thinking about it... Maybe Lancelot had a point.

“Oh... Well, thank you, then,” Merlin said, grinning. “For asking for help when you didn’t need it.”

“And thank you,” Lancelot replied. “For always having an excuse to let me kiss you on the cheek. I think I’ll miss, this time, though.”

“Yeah?”

“Yes,” Lancelot agreed, reaching out to pull Merlin to him.

When they finally kissed properly, though, Merlin couldn’t help but thinking this was the first time either of them had got their aim just right.
