..ehm.. sorry, OP, I went ahead with my insanity and opted for Regene in a 'united we stand!' sort of AU. It’s funny how things you start just for fun are sometime leavening into something so long…. I apologize if it's not what you wanted, hope you'd find something interesting in this anyway .

EDIT: After I read the wonderful story of the Writer!Anon above, I’m kind of ashamed to post my dull try at it, but, since it’s done… one more try won’t hurt in the end! Unfortunately, it’s nothing that brilliant. ^^;

* * *

She knew from the start it was a bad idea.

She knew it has been a bad idea to insist in escorting the visitor to the hangar; moreover take that little diversion to the container where the Gundams were resting, waiting for the next battle, and quickly sneaking into the cockpit of her brother’s unit, a place free from those annoying security cameras that seems to follow them everywhere, on board of the Ptolemy. But she hadn't seen him nearly two months and she really needed a moment with him alone, because things are going to get complicated in the next future, and who knows when he was going to be back again….

Getting answers from him was nearly impossible. Every time she asked him any kind of practical question, Regene had eluded her questions with his vague affirmations and his half-amused smile. He was smiling at her in that same fashion when Amy hurried him into the cockpit of the sleeping Cherudium.
- I’ve never liked being inside mobile suits - he chirped, apparently amused by her more than reasonable haste.
- Where the hell have you been?! - she asked when the hatch of the cockpit closed on them, sitting on his lap in a more interrogatory than seductive fashion. Regene shrugged and distractedly placed a hand on her well-rounded thigh.
- I’m sorry if I make you worry, my dear...
- It’s not me, you silly, it’s all of us. You made us wait for more than a week before giving us the right information and you know how things got even worse for us after the African elevator… dammit, you must know that..!
Regene’s hand climbed up to her hip and he sighed lightly - I understand that I made you worry, but now we should just enjoy this moment and leave all those other annoying…- Amy sighed with exasperation.
- Jesus, if this it’s all you can think about every time we…
- It’s you that pushed me inside the dark cockpit of your brother’s Gundam, Amy Dylandy, or am I wrong..?

She was at loss of words in front of that never-fading smile of him, so pleased with himself to have win also that confrontation. He certainly could be really, really irritating….
- You won’t tell me anything, not even this time, right…? - she asked, nearly resigned.
- No - he answered looking straight into her eyes, his eyelids unflinching.
- …I wonder why I’m still asking and even fooling myself you’d actually change…
- It’s because you know that in the end you trust me, and you can’t help that… - he replied, holding her glance in his own. He could really be a hell annoying, yet, when he looked at her with her hazy glance of those grenade eyes, all annoyance was forgotten.
- How can I trust you, Regene..? - she asked, gently lowering her forehead to touch his one.
- I’m giving you all the best chance Celestial Being has ever had…
- It’s not that.
- Yes, it is.
- You think you know better than me…?
- I always know better than anyone... - he replied in his most playful tone. Amy sighed again at his childish cocky reply, wrapped her strong arms around his neck and closed her eyes.

Regene had a dream, and he made her fall for his dream before than for him.
He felt so frail and weak in her arms, under the heated pressure of her wanting hands, yet, he was the force that behind the scenes was pushing them forward. He believed in what they were doing, and she could not help but to believe in him.
It was not gratitude, not at all. To tell the truth, when he firstly contacted her to use her as a prototype for developing new prosthetic technology, she had despised a man so cynical to openly talk of ‘test animal’ when referring to her, but she accepted anyway, giving in to the promise she could have been able to help Neil as well.

For the long months she didn’t get to met him in person, she had imagined Regene Regetta like some sort of ruthless mafia-like paramilitary officer with a cruel, martial vacuity of mind, instead, she found out he was an artist. His bravery was the external manifestation of a mind ten times quicker than that of average people. He could use his little amount of power to pull the strings of a world-wide matter keeping a profile so low none would have ever guess that lazy individual was so aware of what was going on behind the surface, not even his almost-omniscient master.
An acrobat on a tight rope.
Working with him, together with the other members of Celestial Being, she learned that indolent, apparently amoral man was really that courageous. Living fast, risking everything on every tiny straw of a chance, always looking forward.. if not for the time he turned to look at her. He saw in her things other people, not even her beloved brothers, were able to see.
He entrusted her some of his secrets, allowing her to risk in first person, while her brothers always wanted to protect her; and he guessed well that she would have accepted any risk, because he had read in that crippled girl such a desire to fight for sparing others the terrible fate she had got so strong it couldn’t be limited to help from the sidelines in the unequal struggle Neil, Lyle and everyone else was carrying on.

Once, he even went as far as saying that she was the one showing him the best of humanity. Amy shut his mouth with a kiss, because she knew that that man was skilled enough to lie in such a convincing way, but if it was a lie, she didn't want to know.
- I didn’t tell Tieria nor Sumeragi about the information I gave you last time - she said in one gasp when she broke from a kiss even more heated than the one she was just recalling in her mind.
- I know.. - he whispered in her hear, while his lips were running down her neck, looking for her pale flesh under the tightly fastened uniform - I need you… - he added.
- ..I need you, too. - she replied, sliding her firm hands under his shirt.
When they had more time for themselves, he loved to indulge in contemplation of the irregular pattern of the freckles on her skin - unperfected, unpredictable - tracing constellations among them with his wise fingers till the point where it melted with the artificial, immaculate skin of her bionic body-parts.

Also in bed, he was lazy and laid back. He liked to play her like a piano, stroking her like he was following some secret design visible only to him. He was not that great of a lover, she could feel it, even though he was the only lover she has ever had. But that awe in his eyes as his relaxed fingers traced her whole body like the map of some hidden treasure he was the only owner of, it was enough to make her shiver from the inside and to make her head spin every time she realized how crazy, yet beautiful and unexpected all of that has been for both of them.

“I was not programmed to do anything like this” he had said to her once, as he was resting against her soft breast, in a forgotten passage of Lagrange 3. Her thighs were still wrapped around his waist and he was running his slim fingers down her back without malice, with the same distracted tenderness a young child would have used to stroke a pet. He said it so casually, and maybe he did not really mind that, but the thought that he was programmed into how he should have felt or what he would have been experiencing in his most intimate life filled the generous heart of Amy with such a sudden sadness she was left out of words, and all she could do was hold him even tighter, feeling his skinny chest raise in an almost surprised sigh.
She kissed him again, remembering the way she had really wanted to show him those things he was never supposed to know, and she drove her hands down his shirt to search again for the oddly alluring sensation of his ribcage under her fingers. The idea of being the first one to him has always tickled the fantasy of Amy Dylandy, reaching that hidden corner of her soul where she has always feel a step behind in everything: the not-so-special little sister of such talented twin brothers, the poor crippled girl forced to spent her life stuck to a machine that practically lived in her place, the generic supporting pilot of the Ptolemy when both her brothers had been appointed as being nothing less than Gundam Meisters…
From the first time Regene had placed that hazy glance of his on her, asking her without hesitations to become his personal reference on board, to the first time he stroked her left arm with his hands to make sure his engineers had made a good job with her artificial limbs… up to the first time he rushed inside of her, caught in her needing kisses and pressed down by her body, so much stronger than his own, oblivious of any convenient precaution and restraint, he’d make her feel a ‘first one’.
The only one, maybe…
She forced back that childish, sickly out-of-place thought, and she kissed him again, hard, to stop her mouth to ask anything, but his mouth answered in the way she wanted the most. Amy shivered and clenched her thighs around his hips as Regene’s thin hands struggled a little with the zipper of her uniform’s trousers - oh, Goddamn Tieria, why he insisted with those crazy tight trousers for their uniforms?! - and finally were able to reach her. His fingers seemed to have lost all their usual laziness, as they swiftly slide inside her shell, that smelled like that ocean Regene had never touched for real, and that welcomed him in his whirly waters. His hand dived inside that submarine cave and the soft walls of it wrapped around it. He gingerly examined the texture of them as an unexplored piece of land, and it was just that, that sparkle of never appeased curiosity that shimmered inside his eyes every time he touched her to make Amy feel that way, perused in any detail before being actually conquered, studied carefully like she was something never witnessed before, and she sighed the name of her discoverer as he kept on sinking his fingers inside her soft and salty cave, painting her inside with his artist’s hands with the same devotion the first man in history had used to paint the first uncertain figures on the walls of his cavern.

No need for apologies

The more the merrier, as they say. I'm really quite shocked anyone answered my prompt, let alone two people. I'm flattered and impressed. What you have so far is an interesting look into Regene and what-might-have-been.

She got the certitude that it has been one hell of a bad idea in the moment the cockpit of the Cherudium went open and two menacing figures appeared on the frame.
- Neil! Lyle! - she squeaked, instantly losing all of her languidness.
The cigarette hanging down of Lyle's lip was just a perfect match to the eyepatch on Neil's left eye in making the broad-shouldered silhouettes of the twin brothers even more scary. Behind them, Tieria's face was ruby with indignation at the behavior of his genetic brother.
- AMY CAUGHT! AMY CAUGHT! - Haro joyfully repeated, and Amy cursed the day she'd have the stupid thought it would have been sweet to teach him how to play Hide & Seek.

She tried to jump up from Regene’s lap but she calculated wrongly the distance and hit her head hard in the gun sight of the Cherudium. Swearing like an old man, Amy hold her head with her hands and moved to the side, her unfastened belt dangling down her waist. She had a sudden flashback of that one time she found Miss Returner in the kitchen, holding an ice bag on top of her head, but the following considerations were immediately washed away by an high-pitched -No, wait!!
Regene, who had always been horrified by physical violence, grasped the seat of Cherudium as it was the only thing that can save him from being slaughtered as the two men came closer.
- Wait!

With a perfect synchronicity the brothers would have denied to possess if asked about later, Neil and Lyle caught the right and the left shoulder of the lover of their precious little sister and catapulted him on the floor of the hangar, approaching him menacingly afterward.
“Fantastic” Amy tell to herself while she was hastily struggling to get decently dressed again “now I know what my life in high school would have been if I ever attended one, any of my boyfriend getting scared by my older brothers!”

Neither Neil nor Lyle pulled a classical high-school comedy “what were you doing with my sister?” though, since the answer was more than obvious, they just stared for a little while at the quivering Regene, as he recovered his breath and raised his glance again to encounter their hard faces.
With his usual nonchalance he raised on his still a little shaking knees and smirked - Now there’s no need to use such rude manners, you don’t want Ribbons to know…-

Neil, that never trusted Regene to begin with, didn’t let him finish. With a rudeness he reserved to those who had earned his deep despise, hel grabbed the horrified Regene by the collar and heavily breathed on him
-… Ribbons, so you say... ? Ribbons, can go screw, and I can smash your face on this floor right now if just…
- Neil! - Amy said firmly, struggling to keep at least enough self control for not start screaming, and look at her brother straight in the face with the puppy look she knew he was not able to resist.
- - Please, don’t … it’s true, we have enough problems already…
Neil Dylandy arched his only visible eyebrow and with a sigh he let Regene go, under the disapproving glance of Lyle.

- Amy is right - Tieria said, taking the chance of speaking given by that moment of silent tension - if you beat him, someone would ask who, why and when, and this is the last thing we need right now, Ribbons finding out that Regene has met us here.
The two Irish pilots gave him a not-so-pleased look, but none of them seemed to have anything to reply. Tieria, that seemed to have fully recovered his composure, continued - I will escort Regene to his spaceship. Next time, Amy Dylandy, try to keep a more responsible conduct.

It was quite predictable, knowing Tieria, that he scolded her just in order to restrain her brothers from doing it and inevitably make it personal, but still his words make her feel quite ashamed and her cheeks turned bright red. Regene, on the contrary, seemed to be perfectly at ease as he stood up with his usual smirk on his face and casually drop his grenade eyes on her.
- Seems I’m leaving…
- … and won’t be back, for a while, right…? -she asked, fighting to keep her tone as neutral as possible.
- ...Amy, Amy, Amy… I will, I will for sure…- he tried to reassure her , but more than ever his faint smile looked like a cheap camouflage for a colossal lie, and it took Amy only a couple of words to rag it.
- ...when, then?
Regene shrugged, and lowered his eyes-… oh.. I have so many things to do….

* * *

There came confused days. Time seemed to have lost its consistency and just re-acquire its real consistence with his arrivals, and lost it again with is departures, and not because of the love she nursed for him, but because of the small precious beads of information that Regene causally drop on them and that were the only track to follow in the muddy waters of the marsh of sorrow the Ptolemy sailed with the half-broken compass of its questionable ideals. Not even in a single occasion Amy obtained from Regene an answer and her original question got simplified in a more essential and indefinite “will you be back?” he discarded with just another graceful smile and a confused reply, because not even him had enough of a poker face to give somewhat of a definitive answer back in those days, but it doesn’t matter.
Despite all evidences, she could not let her faith in him be shaken, because she needed to believe in something she could hold against all they still had to face.

Anew’s deception caught her off guard.

With her ears still filled with her brother’s screams, Amy enrolled herself on her sit, clinging on her keyboard like it was some kind of oracle, and waited for another drop, another answer that did not came.
None, not even Neil, said a word about her mentor in front of her, but facts were more than enough to raise those questions and to make her breath heavy, and she felt horrible because, despite it all, she still hoped he would have show up again to prove all suspicions wrong, to prove her that those months meant something and swear that he didn’t knew anything more than them about Anew Returner, but she knew she was merely fooling herself.

The monitor stayed empty and silent, and Lyle screamed again….

She would have never expect it would have been that easy.
It’s here, Miss. Fourteen dollars and forty - as she handled the money to the taxi driver, she noticed with surprise how easy had been to get there. Waking up, sipping the coffee while the radio was babbling some crap about traffic and weather, wearing her most formal attire and sinking in the street, full of people minding their own business like a years-long war had not ended just three months before.
It reminds her of a conversation on a lazy afternoon, when her fingers were running down purple locks and crumpled sky-blue fabric, and the meteorites were dancing in the emptiness of the space outside like sleepy whales of an endless sea - she could almost hear his voice, so clear still in her memory.
“All in all, the history of the world is made of broken fences. Life is a flow that can’t be stopped. You burn a whole forest to the ground and you got the impression that life has abandoned that land of ashes, but just give it little time and you’ll see ants, worms, beetles crawl out of the soil to walk on that burned land again, you’ll see the grass grow again from between the carbonized corpses of the trees, looking greener than before, and birds and animal coming back to the land they have to flee from… Beat a nation to death with your weapons and oppress its people in any possible way, but unless you kill everyone from the last old man to the younger newborn, you won’t be able to destroy that life those people would fight for. Humans can’t be controlled. They can be enchained, killed, brainwashed, but you won’t stop them from hoping and you won’t stop life from filling again those spaces death left silent and empty. Given time, the world will be able to cure itself even from this cancer, Amy... it will take back everything the war seems to have stolen away, because life is stronger than that… - short of breath, he paused, and stared at the ceiling with that same hazy look of him, so full of that sparkle of marvel she had never known in anyone else. Beside his pompous prose, Regene truly was the torchbearer of her hope.
She raised her head to kiss him on the cheek “I’m not sure which one, but you must have heard this in some movie, don’t you?”
“ ...oh, if you can’t guess it yourself, you’ll never know” he purred, frivolous.
But he was right: the world had started to cure itself. Her flight was perfectly on time and no matter how hard her well-trained eyes tried, she could not see a single mobile suit flying by their side.

- The only time I’ve seen you in such a formal dress before, is when we went to your parent’s grave before leaving for Lagrange 3.
- I think I’ll take this as a compliment - she replied, but she did not smiled like she used to. The sweet, almost messy girl that used to push him inside cockpits and hug him in the passages of space bases had been painted all over with a deeper shade of grey, and he could easily guess how. With his most apathetic tone, he tried to widen the already huge gap between them, unwilling to stare at her almost gloomy figure for very much longer. He let his grenade eyes wander on the empty wall of the visitors hall, the solid apathy of the guards, the cheap wood of the table. It was all more modestly depressing that utterly dramatic.
- Let this be short, Amy, not that I have a lot of things to do, but visitors got limited time. If you are here it’s because you finally want what you’ve always begged me to give you.
His high-pitched voice and his cold tone made his words sound as pleasant as a paper cut. Amy could felt her stomach twitch. - what do you mean..?
- Answers.
- No, I don’t.
Her stomach twitched again when she saw Regene sporting his usual unreadable smile in response, like anything ever happened. - If it’s still not enough for you, go ahead asking, my dear…
Amy hold her breath and tried to fight him with the same simulated indifference he seemed so settled to dispense her, no matter what.
- You didn’t tell us about Anew.

- Seems you did not trusted me enough, in the end.

- You didn’t tell us… why you didn’t tell us about Anew?

He was expecting her to confront him about Anew Returner, still, her question gave the smile on his gracious lips a bitter shade. - Do you think I had any interest or convenience in not telling you about her, beside the obvious?
- But we could have saved her if …!
- I am not God, Amy. Ask Ribbons Almark if you want someone almighty.

Amy masked well her disappointment. Tieria has told her more than once, in his many awkward attempts to implicitly reassure her that his twin was not necessary the filthy traitor Neil thought he was, that none of them could have ever done anything to remove Ribbons’ control over Anew’s mind, still, the cheap rudeness Regene was throwing at her made her shrink on the inside, but she forced herself to not give up so soon. She took a silent, well concealed deep breath and attempted to bring the discussion to a safer ground.

- General Mannequin said that there pretty good chances you’ll get off quite easily from this trial, since there’s consistent evidence you conspired against Ribbons Almark.
- Now this is good news. I should start to think which kind of job I’ll be able to do. I’ve always wanted to be an actor, or .. a manager, maybe…

Indeed, Regene would have made a great burlesque performer, she thought looking at his drama queen pose, his overdramatic sigh, his eyes rolled to the ceiling. That casual half-reasoning about him, so natural and cozy, opened a crack in the cold wall standing between them.
She has been through difficult months, and she knew how many lies Regene has told them, that he has actually brought her up there, on the tight rope, unaware, or careless about the fact that he could have made her fall anytime.
She couldn’t help to feel guilty because despite everything, despite her brother’s terrible loss, his drama queen sighs and his hazy eyes still made her feel her warm on the inside, and all she wanted right there was being able to touch him once again. She smiled and shook her head.
- Pff, don’t make me laugh you are …crazy… and you are lazy! You can’t survive a damn day on your own out there, you have no idea how to cook yourself a real meal, let alone how to work for real…

Hearing again that warm, familiar note in her voice again was something he has given up any hope to. Under her funeral-like attire, the girl that was mocking him looked just like the same he used to know, the same he didn’t expect to have missed that hard.
- I’m impressed by your faith in my capabilities.
Amy’s lips turned into a genuinely sad smile - You should. You let me down in an horrible way, and you know. You used me. You hurt my family, you hurt us all.. but still...
The girl sighed and glanced at the empty wall. God, it was getting pathetic, all of it.
- I want … I want you to know I don’t hate you. You probably won’t care, but that’s how it is, and now… You lead me through al lot of things, there were you know the way. Now you don’t know it anymore, Regene. The world has come to its change, you got nothing else to do.
- You are right. - he answered with another exaggerate, theatrical sigh. - but it seems I’ll have no real chance of doing anything else than sitting here and staring at the ceiling for a long time to come, my dear, so my lack of purpose in life it’s hardly a problem right now….

He raised his hazy grenade glance upon her once again and smiled of his vague, semi-amused smile. Amy could not help to feel a strong fit of nostalgia at the sight of the same expression she used to love so much, and her stomach crumpled on itself realizing that Regene was no longer looking her in the eyes. Could it be shame or simply the fact that he no longer had anything to gain from her.
Amy looked into her heart, and serenely accepted the fact that her heart really doesn’t care.

- I haven’t seen any mobile suit coming here, not even one…
- Told you.
- You told me a lot of lies.
- I did.
- But I still believe in you, Regene. - she closed her eyes, because she didn’t want his glance to freeze her words, she wanted to tell him everything she had in her mind, before it was to late - I’ve never believed in someone the way I believe in you. And I don’t want to let it go. I still want to believe your dream was real.

Tight Rope - [9] anonymous November 8 2009, 11:44:46 UTC
- I have not been programmed to …

- dream..? don’t give me that crap again…

Amy paused a little and stared at him until Regene finally raised his glance from the table and dared look into her eyes.
- ...how do think you went this far, you idiot…? Never asked yourself what was the reason why you did? I know Regene, I know well because I’m the same as you, we could not stay put, we have to prove the others and ourselves how great we were in stunning them. We wanted to amaze everyone. We had a dream, and we did it.
- You did it, you, my brother, your brothers… I just used you all, isn’t this what you were just saying..?- the grin on his face trembled at his pointless attempt to make the girl maybe even more pissed at him. A real coward never beg for forgiveness.
- I have tried with all my might to make up my mind you are the worst asshole that has ever met in my life - Amy muttered lowering her face to look at her uncomfortable formal shoes, and then she smiled of an aged-up, wiser smile she didn’t use to wear before - but ..how was that..? the easiest solution is normally the better one…? You taught me that, the third time you came to see me in the hospital.
- You were so scared I was gonna make you do something sinful, little one… - Regene tried to smirk mischievously, but all that emerged on his lips was a slightly sad imitation of a smile.
- Have the balls to tell you didn’t, you… - she pouted.
- I did.. and I do not regret that…
- Yeah…

It was a soft sensation, it filled her from inside and made her hands tingle and her head feel lighter. Words flown out of her mouth naturally, easy as breathing.
- I still love you, and you know…

She immediately realized she was wrong. She’d never guess she would have seen him so completely baffled. He adjusted the glasses on his nose but it was just a move to cover the utter surprise that was crossing his face. None of the many scenarios he had elaborated was contemplating the probability of Amy not only forgiving him, but actually telling him she still had feelings for him. And in none of this scenarios, the cold-blooded, mischievous strategist that orchestrated a coup against Ribbons Almark in person, had been able to forecast the relieve that filled his synthetic heart at that revelation.
Amy smiled and ran a hand across the table to reach his pale, small one.

- I can’t help it, Regene. I tried, but I can’t. You were my only mate, and I want you to be my mate,
again, when you’ll be out of here.
- Your brothers will kill me before we can have our first dinner out… - he babbled, trying to recover his composure while his thin fingers wrapped around her hand.
- I’ll talk to them, they’ll understand. And Tieria is on my side. He’s quite fond of you, even though, he’s strangely shy about admitting it. - Amy smiled again. - Come with me, and I’ll show you the best humanity has to offer for real.

Could it really be that simple…? No, it probably wasn’t, but with him, it has always been about terrible
timing and bad ideas, and she was more than ready to take the risk of having another one.

- …and you are not scared…- he asked, some of his usual irritating self-confidence back to the half-smile on his lips.
- show me I have nothing to worry about, the day we’ll see again.
- Is this a challenge..?
- No, it’s a wish. It’s up to you to make it real.
- I was not programmed for this, you know. But great performers always have improvisation up their sleeve.
She smiled and rolled her eyes to the ceiling, as she stood up. He was really a hopeless idiot.
- Be prepare for my bad reviews, then. I won’t be this nice a second time…
- Now it is a challenge, isn’t it…?
- If you wish…

[end]

Finished. This story really got out of my hand, but I had fun writing it, so thanks for the prompt..^^
