Their second Christmas dating. The first passed without note between them, Arthur ignoring it and Merlin letting him. This time, though, he had insisted. They drove down in Arthur's car, Merlin falling asleep until Arthur woke him up because they were unquestionably and utterly lost. Merlin got them to his mother's house without killing Arthur for his sense (or lack) of direction. Just.
Arthur had never met Hunith and Merlin knew he was nervous. It was hard to miss when Arthur was nervous, he'd either get excited as a three year old on sugar or as stony and brittle and silent as... toffee. Un-sweetened toffee. Or something. Hunith was waiting for them, peering into the darkness from the lit porch, a blanket wrapped around herself, so Merlin got out to hug her, to hold her and get his fill of her scent and her feel and her arms and voice. When he turned Arthur was stood with their cases, awkward and biting his lip.
“Mum, this is Arthur.”
“Oh my, it is so good to finally meet you. I've seen photos and heard stories of course, but come inside both of you! It's freezing!”
She interrogated Arthur and learnt every listened carefully as he told her solemnly about how they'd met and what Merlin meant to him and what his intentions were. Merlin found it all quite funny, especially when they got onto protecting him because he was quite capable of protecting himself, thank you very much. They went to bed and Arthur lay holding his hand, a little stiff, breathing gently in the darkness. Merlin grinned, thinking of his gift for Arthur.
“Merlin?”
“Yes?”
“I like her.”
“Good. She likes you, too.”
“Yeah?”
“Yes. Of course. Did you doubt it?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“I'm not... I'm not used to families, Merlin. I don't really know how they work.”
“You have a family. Morgana, your father.”
“Father adopted Morgana when I was twelve. By the time I was fourteen she'd moved out. Yeah, we're close enough, but only recently. And father... well. Never mind. He did love me, I always knew that.”
“That's what it's like with Mum. She loves me to bits and then coos at the bits as if they're the most adorable... I'm being weird, aren't I?”
“A little. Idiot. What was it like, growing up here?”
So Merlin told him. Everything. Or everything that could fit in the space of time it took Arthur to drift off into snuffling snorts and snores. Merlin bit his lip, vibrating with excitement for the morning. For Arthur to open his present and see what Merlin had done.
It was very much worth the wait. For Arthur's stunned face, for his stuttered breathing and embarrassed tears, for the way he pushed that away and instead bounded to his feet and waltzed Merlin about the living room, laughing and whirling until Merlin felt he might puke up his breakfast of chocolates and pancakes and other horribly sweet christmas treats.
Hunith smiled, bewildered, and picked up the little bit of paper.
“Oh, Merlin! You sly thing. So, you two are roomies now, hmm?”
“Yup. I spread it around that I was struggling to pay the rent, and now I have a room-mate. Or rather, you do. You know, you'll have to offer me mates' rates because I can't really afford your place.”
“Whatever. I don't care. You're... thank you! Thank you thank you... Merlin.”
“I know.”
And he did know. He knew how much it meant to Arthur, which is why he'd done it.

Arthur being so happy for that gesture at Christmas broke my heart and speaks to me on a personal level. In an ideal world no one should have to live like that.
Looking forward to your next update!

Room-mates? Arthur will take what he can get. It makes me sad for them both.
