Elena also started bringing Arthur to police events, as arm candy. He always flirted horrendously with all the guys and acted like a proper queen, camp and silly and it looked like so much fun. He always gave Merlin a look that said 'see? They don't hate me'. But Arthur was an eccentric businessman, famous, always in the news and women's trashy mags in vein of 'what a shame he's gay'. The coppers mostly just laughed at him.
“Did you see him on Friday? Ha! Godwyn should hang out with us, we could show her what a real man is.”
“Oh, Coop, you wish she would.”
“Don't you? All that... those curves, those tits.... man! I so would!”
“she would, I bet. Desperate for a taste, I bet... spending all that time with that pansy... I bet she's gagging for a rea- ooph.”
Merlin started and walked around the lockers to see what happened. Grange is clutching his crotch, staring at Elena who has her hands on her hips.
“Gagging for it? From you? I've seen you change, Grange. You're cock's the size of a pea. And Coop? I heard Rach dumped you because you couldn't get it up for a girl.”
“I am not a pansy!”
“Me thinks you doth protest too much. Arthur's far more of a man than either of you. Also, he's much richer, much more popular, much more important and succesful.”
“Only cus he was born to it all.”
“Actually, he was. Yes. But then his father found out that he was, as you put it, a pansy. His father took his money, sued him for breach of contract and had enough power to make Arthur homeless. And then, the pansy, the non man, the guy you mock, built himself a business and a life and became the most wanted man in the UK, by men and women. Where as you? Were born into a police family, became a constable and look at that! You're middle aged and still a constable. So, yeah. I think...”
Coop bent double. Because Elena kicked him in the groin.
“See ya, girls. Keep on dreaming, who knows? Maybe one day someone will give in.”
She spotted Merlin and grinned. Merlin sighed.

Seeing Arthur all the time was hard. Because the more Merlin got to know him, the more he liked him. Not just the way he looked and smiled and laughed. The way he teased Merlin and bantered with him but had no qualms telling Merlin he was a mate if Merlin needed it, not qualms sitting quietly and gently nudging until Merlin gave up whatever was on his mind.
Also there was the way Arthur was careful not to touch Merlin, which was frustrating but showed a level of self control Merlin appreciated. Arthur also never mentioned the day they had, the moment of more than friends. He never asked Merlin out, never spent time alone with him. Sometimes Merlin caught a painful look on Arthur's face, but it was always brief.
And then, everything changed. Again. And this time it really was the space of a day that changed the world. It was a peaceful protest, a hangover of hippies with singing and guitars and happy people. High people. They talked Merlin's ear off about their cause, yelled their chants when the MPs went by, were happy to just be there with their signs and their voice. Merlin was settling into it, impressed by the demonstration of 'people power', and then...
Merlin remembers a loud noise, then a noiseless buzz cutting everything else out. He remembers the sensation of flying, the way the sky seemed to split to grey and then black. He remembers the sensation of strangers' hands on him, the picture of Elena's worried face, remembers more darkness. Most of all he remembers the first time his hearing cleared, he heard Arthur.
“Merlin... oh god oh god is he... he's so white, so white... shit.”
“Shh, Arthur he's going to be okay. It's okay.”
“No, no. no it's not. Look at him, Elena... Merlin, I'm so sorry... all this time, all these days... we could have... you could have and I'd have never...”
