Merlin, watching in horror, could see Arthur’s eyes screwed shut in pain. Dolwin grunted ferociously with the effort, as he pushed himself in deeper.

Dolwin scrabbled to his feet. “You’re going to die, you monster!” he screamed at Merlin.
“You first!” Merlin growled, stretching out his hand. Arthur ran to his side and seized his arm.
“Wait,” Arthur said.
“But I have to protect you!” Merlin cried, his eyes burning gold.
Arthur stepped forward, standing between Merlin and the other man. “Wait, I say,” he commanded. Staring at Dolwin, he said: “You have one chance. Leave Camelot and keep Merlin’s secret, and I’ll order him not to kill you.”
Dolwin sneered: “Ha! The king’s going to execute him! And I’m going to go right on fucking you, or I’ll tell Uther how you couldn’t get enough of my cock up your arse.”
“Then you leave us no choice,” Arthur said.
Merlin lifted his hand again. “No,” said Arthur. “Leave him to me.”
He took a dagger from the table and stabbed Dolwin between the ribs. The lord collapsed motionless on the floor.
Merlin said: burn. Dolwin’s body set alight, and burned until there was nothing left but ash.
Merlin turned to Arthur, his eyes blue once more but still fierce. “How could you let him do that to you?”
“It was the price he asked for silence.” Arthur sounded weary, his voice devoid of emotion.
“Nothing is worth that price,” Merlin insisted.
Arthur was silent. He kicked at the pile of ash. “You shouldn’t have interfered, Merlin.”
“Thank the gods I did. If I hadn’t, who knows how long he would have gone on abusing you?”
“I shouldn’t have killed him,” Arthur said, still staring at the remains. “My father will want to know what has become of him. If he becomes suspicious of you, you’ll be in terrible danger.”
“I’ll survive, Arthur. We’ll manage.”
Arthur gazed at him. Merlin found his breath hitching - Arthur hadn’t looked him in the eye for so long.
“Sweep up the ash. I think I need that bath now.”
“OK. Arthur, can I help you?” Merlin asked tentatively.
Arthur hesitated, before answering: “All right.”
Merlin disposed of the ash, and helped Arthur out of his clothes. He could hardly bear to look at the hand-shaped marks and bruises on Arthur’s hips and shoulders and buttocks, some red, some yellow, some purple.
Merlin gently traced his finger over a bruise near Arthur’s collarbone. “Please don’t do anything like that again,” he said quietly.
“I’ll do whatever it takes,” Arthur declared. “I’m not losing you.”
Merlin looked at Arthur, moved by the determination in Arthur’s voice.
Very cautiously, in case he was unwelcome, Merlin leaned forward and kissed Arthur tenderly on the lips. Arthur didn’t push him away.
Then Merlin helped him into the bath and Arthur eased gratefully into the water.

Merlin gently traced his finger over a bruise near Arthur’s collarbone. “Please don’t do anything like that again,” he said quietly.
