“Merlin! Language!”, Arthur scolding, scandalized. Merlin didn’t ever talk like that! What on earth had gotten into him?
“I’m sorry! I didn’t know how else to say it.” Arthur didn’t need to look at Merlin to know the bright pink that was no doubt spread across Merlin’s prominent cheekbones.
“Oh, never mind.” Arthur sighed wearily. It had to come up sometime, after all.
Silence descended again for a time, each of the men lost in thought again.
“Sire, shall I leave you to consider this? Maybe Gaius could answer your questions better than I can.”
“I think you had better see to the Council for now, but you will not breathe a word of this to them, do you understand?”
“Of course, Arthur.” Merlin rose to his feet, began crossing to the door again.
“Merlin.” Arthur called again, and Merlin turned, looking a question at him.
“You may tell the council that a wedding will commence a week from today. They need not know any other details. And then I want you to return here and assist me in preparing myself to receive the Lady Guiniviere and Sir Lancelot. There is much to discuss.”
Merlin’s face conveyed his shock at such a quick decision, and Arthur hastened to add, “I think your suggestion has some honorable merits, but as you say, all involved must be in accord.” Almost to himself, he added, “Even if they don’t know yet what part they will play in this.”
Merlin continued to stare at him mutely. And then, slowly, a small smile spread on Merlin’s face, not one of pleasure or mirth, but a slight smile that was meant only for Arthur and spoke of pride and acceptance and a little bit of sadness.
Arthur only nodded at him slightly, acknowledging without words what passed between them. And then decided it was time that things started to return to normal, if only beginning with small things.
“Why are you still standing there, anyway? Are you deaf? I gave you your orders, and you’re still standing there, gawking at me. Off you go.”
This time, Merlin’s smile was wider, and there was a slight chuckle to his “Yes, my King” before he was gone.
Arthur raised his fist to him mouth and managed to stifle the single sob that escaped him.
