“She will make a fine Queen, certainly.”

“ Yes! And she loves you, Arthur.”

“She won’t forever.” Arthur’s voice was wistful, but also matter of fact, resigned. “But she will be a very good Queen.”

Merlin gaped at him in shock. What was he supposed to say to that?

And worse yet , how could he deny it?

Arthur had, in typical Arthur-fashion, thrown himself completely into courting Guiniviere properly since Camelot had been re-taken from Morgana. He’d arranged dinners with her two or three times a week, always ensuring that doors were open and a chaperone was present at all times, usually Merlin or Gwen’s brother Elyan. There were stolen kisses of course, and hand holding that was as sweet and chaste as it could be. Everyone who knew them knew the intent of both, knew that this pretty, strong-willed former maid of Uther’s traitorous ward-nay, illegitimate daughter-- had captured the heart of the crown prince. There were reactions that ran the gamut of emotions, from outright disapproval-mostly from the ailing Uther and his closest council members-to utterly surprised delight-mostly from everyone else.

Merlin fell into the second category of course. They were both his friends, and he loved them both dearly and was happy for their happiness. There was no doubt that Gwen’s simple, forthright way of expressing herself and her opinions, particularly those concerning the common people, was a positive influence on the still-spoiled, and sometimes in need of a reality check, prince.

It also meant that what Arthur and Merlin had shared on overnight hunts, around campfires, and out of the way inns and taverns, in the palace alcoves and armory and in each others’ beds, had to stop.

It was Merlin who had called a halt to it, even long before the horrible events beginning with the chase for the Cup of Life. He had seen Arthur’s willingness to give up his life and his kingdom for Guiniviere, and his heart had ached with both pride and sadness. He was proud, and frankly a little astonished, that Arthur, once so selfish and proud of his entitlement, was willing to sacrifice so much, his entire birthright, for love of a lovely handmaiden. As for himself, a little part of him had broken inside, for though he and Arthur had not yet lost their virtue to each other, they had come very close, and they had discovered the pleasures of the flesh through each other.
