Re: Arthur/Gwen; Arthur/Merlin; Gwen/Lancelot WARNING: SPOILERS FOR SEASON 4, NON CON 5/? anonymous May 25 2011, 16:11:32 UTC
(sorry, last chapter was numbered incorrectly

An Arrangement of Hearts 5/?

Further warnings: Spoilers for season 4, non con, kidnapping, violence

Arthur seemed to shake himself then, for next he was calling for the men to get back to work, to continue with their training. Typically, Gwaine lingered behind, asking a few more concerned questions and then leaning in to Merlin and almost whispering to come to him if anyone should ever bother or threaten Merlin again.

As grateful as Merlin was, it was still a mite disappointing to know that even his friend Gwaine saw him as a bit delicate. Oh, if only Merlin could tell them….

Arthur ordered Gwaine back to the training field with a wry tone of exasperation, and came to stand near Merlin, watching silently as the knights resumed sword forms and hand to hand practice. There was still a tension in Arthur’s shoulders, something a bit stronger than the mere annoyance that still radiated from him.

The silence stretched between them. Usually, Merlin would be busy all day off on the sidelines while Arthur trained with the knights, but today seemed somewhat different. He didn’t want to do anything that might earn further ire from Arthur.

“Sire? Shall I begin on your own sword, or…” It was all Merlin could think of, trying hard for normalcy.

Arthur didn’t answer for so long that Merlin thought he’d chosen to ignore him. When he did reply, he didn’t look at Merlin and his words were clipped and short. “You should have told me.” Arthur paused for a moment, and then added, “Me, or one of the knights, at least. I regret that you do not feel you could confide in me”.

Merlin tried to interject “No, no, it’s not like that!”, but Arthur continued on as if he hadn’t heard him.

“A bruised or damaged manservant is of no use to me. In the future, you will inform me of these types of circumstances.”

“I really am not hurt, it’s fine, really”, Merlin tried again, and was startled when Arthur all but exploded at him, “It is not all right! It is so very not all right!”

From his peripheral vision, Merlin was aware that the knights had paused again in their practice at Arthur’s outburst, and were watching them.

Arthur seemed to notice too, for he took a deep breath, of the sort Merlin saw him do when he centered himself before a tournament or contest, and continued in a quieter tone, “Physical abuse of anyone under the protection of the crown, or for that matter, any citizen of Camelot, will not be tolerated under my reign. Are we clear on this, Merlin?”

“Yes, sire”.

“Good. See to it that you remember. And if you become aware of any other such abuse of position toward staff or citizen, you will tell me at once.”

Abruptly, Arthur jogged back onto the field, yelling about Elyan’s form and Percival’s footwork, and Merlin was left confused and warmed and embarrassed and flattered.
