Warnings: Spoilers for season 4, non con, kidnapping, violence
Merlin made his way to the practice field where he knew Arthur and the knights would be training now. He carried an armful of armor to polish, and no doubt there would be plenty of swords to tend to while the knights of Camelot, both new and established, were put through their paces by the new king. Gaius had finally allowed Merlin to leave after nearly an hour spent spreading soothing ointment on his back and ribs and a very stern lecture on the dangers of allowing such injuries to go unattended. Merlin’s ribs could have been broken, Gaius had pointed out, and then had checked the door to their chambers, lowered his voice and asked Merlin why he hadn’t told him. Merlin had tried to say that he was all right, it was nothing, several times, in fact. That claim had been met only with a steely glare from Gaius, and a sharp admonishment.
Merlin sighed wearily. It seemed to him that everyone was over reacting. He really was okay, it wasn’t anything serious. The fuss that was being made over it all embarrassed him.He hadn’t wanted to get Arthur involved, mainly because Arthur’s eyes held deep shadows these days, both with the weight of responsibility of kingship and the loss of both his father and his most trusted knight, Lancelot. Merlin had tried to remind Gaius that while he wasn’t a trained warrior, Gaius of all people knew he was in no way helpless. If it came down to it, he could have defended himself against Agravaine with his magic without Arthur having to know…
To that, Gaius had tutted and yanked his shirt back down a bit harder than was really necessary, and pointed out that no, he really couldn’t, not while Merlin’s magic was still outlawed in Camelot.
As much as Merlin wanted to protect and shield those he cared for, it seemed in recent days anything he did only proved to upset them.
He was so lost in thought and his own self-pitying mood that he failed to notice he was almost upon the training field, and the effect his presence had on the practicing knights. All of the men of Arthur’s Round Table had migrated off the field and were now standing in a loose circle around him, with Arthur almost in front of him. The older and more seasoned knights weren’t as close, but they were within hearing distance, and they too had stopped what they were doing and seemed to be waiting for something.
