“Merlin, I just need you to open your eyes for me.” Gwaine pleaded. The still, limp body of Merlin is his arms. “Merlin, please.” His voice cracking on the last part, “Just open your eyes.”
Gwaine pressed harder onto the deep gash along Merlin's Stomach. The boy groaned in return.
“That’s it Merlin, stay awake. It will be alright, you just need to stay awake.”
“Gwaine?” came the tired mumble from his embrace.
“Merlin, shhh. Keep your strength, we just need to stop this bleeding.”
“Gwaine.” Merlin moaned, this time in pain, his face screwing up and Gwaine applied more pressure.
“I know, I’m sorry. I’m sorry.” Gwaine whispered against Merlin's temple, feeling the tremors beneath it.
“Tell.” Merlin breathed, “Tell Arthur…” Merlin took a gulp of air, “Tell him… not… be a pr-rat” A shaky smile graced Merlin's features, his eyes creasing slightly. Normally that smile made something warm curl inside Gwaine, today it made him seize up in dread.
“No Merlin. No. You’ll be fine, you’ll see.”
“Gwaine-“ a feeble cough wracked Merlin’s body and Gwaine held him tightly against his chest. “I- I-“ Merlin coughed again, this time blood speckle his lips and Gwaine swallowed down a sob.
“Shhh. I know, I know Merlin.” Gathering the boy more tightly in his arms Gwaine started rocking him in soothing, whispering incoherent thoughts against Merlin's temple. The only sound in the clearing Gwaine mumblings and Merlin's rasping breaths.
Gwaine felt the exact moments when the breaths stopped. Felt the exact moment when his heart broke. And he didn’t know what to do. A few tears leaked from his tightly shut eyes. He wouldn’t look. If he didn’t look, if he couldn’t see it, it couldn’t be true. It can’t be true.
“Merlin please.” He whispered against the cooling skin. “Please.” He sobbed once more.
But he knew it was no use, he knew it, the earth knew it, the birds knew it. Merlin was gone. Gone. And Gwaine was alone, sat on the floor in the woods, a bloody body in his arms.
He could not go back to Camelot. He could run, travel, let his mind be occupied with the roads and towns and forests along the way. Find Merlin a quiet field, somewhere the sun touched every blade of grass during the day and where the moon made it shine at night, somewhere beautiful and serene. That is what Merlin would have wanted.
He could almost feel it now, the warm sun rays dancing on his skin, he imagined he could see the bright golden light, searing through his closed eyelids. He imagined he could feel a warm hand cup his cheek and lift his head-
“Gwaine?” a beautiful voice sounded. Gwaine’s eyes flew open.
“Merlin” he gasped. And the once blue eyes stared back at him with gold. Like the sun. So bright, and warm and alive. “Merlin!” he gasped again, drawing the boy incredibly closer, the impossible heart beat pounding against his own. “Merlin” he sobbed once more. The only thing his mouth seemed able to say, pressing his wet face to the -god, warm, pale skin at Merlin’s neck.
“Shhh.” Merlin cooed, long slender fingers running through Gwaine’s hair. An ironic parody of the scene a few minutes earlier. “It’s alright, I’m here.”
Gwaine pulled his face away, frowning in confusion. “What- How…” Gwaine shook his head, trying to wrap his mind around the fact that Merlin was alive, and here, and warm, and alive.
Merlin offered him a ridiculously sheepish grin. “I may be a little bit magic.” He shrugged.
And Gwaine laughed with delight. Because of course Merlin was magic, he was impossible and brave and true and beautiful and alive. And he did the only thing he could think to do.
He kissed him.

I think my favourite bit was this thought: And Gwaine laughed with delight. Because of course Merlin was magic, he was impossible and brave and true and beautiful and alive. And he did the only thing he could think to do.
He kissed him.
