There was a short pause, broken by Merlin’s quiet response. “No, I’ve never met anyone named that before.”
---
“Gaius!” Merlin burst into the physician’s chambers, panting from the several flights of steps he’d just run and slamming the rickety door closed the moment he’d crossed the threshold. “We may have a problem.”
His mentor looked up at the harried boy and raised an eyebrow, only a frown marring the look of complete lack of surprise. “Good heavens, Merlin,” he said, setting down the vial of medicine he’d been mixing, “whatever have you gotten yourself into this time?”
“It wasn’t my fault this time, Gaius, I swear,” he said with a shake of the head as he threw himself into the empty chair at the end of the table. “But Arthur’s looking for me, only he doesn’t know it’s me, because someone killed the patrol, and it’s all wrong and I don’t know what -”
Gaius cut him off, holding his hands palm-out in the universal sign of ‘stop’. “Merlin,” he said, a hint of amusement and resignation colouring his tone. “From the beginning.” Merlin started to open his mouth, but Gaius stopped him again, this time with a smile. “And slowly, for goodness’ sake.”
Merlin gave him an answering smile, wry and apologetic, before he heaved a sigh and began to explain. “Uther called Arthur for a meeting,” he said, purposefully keeping his voice calm. “The patrol that was sent to the border of Caerleon?” He waited for Gaius’ nod of understanding before he continued, guilt and pain seeping into his words. “They’re dead.”
Gaius’ expression was solemn. “That’s terrible, Merlin, but I still don’t see what that has to do with you.” There was an unvoiced question in his eyes, and Merlin quickly shook his head.
“No, I don’t know how it happened. The king suspects sorcery, of course,” he said, sighing in frustration. Even after all this time in Camelot, he still couldn’t see why other sorcerers didn’t understand that attacking the kingdom would only harden the nobles’ hearts. Yes, what Uther was doing was horrible, and he knew better than most the pains of living a lie. But surely there was another way. “The man that brought the news -- Arthur said that he had a note. It was attached to a body.” There was a moment of silence in which Gaius’ dawning look of unease showed that things were beginning to make sense. “They demanded that Camelot turn over Emrys.”
Gaius frowned. “Isn’t that what you said the druid boy called you?”
Merlin nodded, aghast. “Gaius, what do I do?”
“Merlin,” his mentor said sternly, “you cannot tell Arthur. If-”
“I know,” Merlin interrupted, frustrated not at Gaius but at the situation in general. He could only imagine what Uther would say at the revelation that Merlin was the one the note referred to, and none of the situations his head conjured were pleasant. “It’s not as though I could easily explain why some sorcerers want me.” He let his head drop into his palm, using his other hand to idly trace patterns on the surface of the worktable. “I just wish I knew what they wanted.”
A grim half-smile made its way to Gaius’ face as he clenched the boy’s shoulder. “With any luck, we won’t have to find out.”

I'm kinda chilled by Gaius here. Like, rationally I know this is what would happen. He's displayed that reasoning before. Still, emotionally, I'm like, "Gaius, you're standing back and allowing slaughter of sorcerers by the King's forces, or allowing slaughter of the King's forces by sorcerers!" And I know he does this, he takes care of those he loves and cares for and to hell with the rest, but still... *wibbles*
I am LOVING your fill on this, anon-author. Can't wait to read more!
