Written for Never Have I Ever, enjoy!

Aglain was everything Balinor wasn't. Though they had the same kindness and love, Balinor was far too much like the wind and Aglain was far too much like a rock, constant and steady.

They had met when Merlin was a few months old, when Hunith had been so scared for her son's life that she couldn't think of anything else to do. Balinor had spoken highly of the druids and she knew they'd welcome her with open arms. So she'd packed her bags, told the rest of the village she was going to visit a relative and bundled Merlin onto her chest.

They'd set off immediately, ignoring the warnings of bandits and knights, travelling through deer-track paths that would be unsuitable unless she hadn't needed the secrecy.

"Who are you?" a voice called as Hunith wiped sweat from her brow. Merlin was quietly sleeping, as he had been for most of the journey. He was a good child, everything Hunith could have asked for, even with his magic.

"I need help," Hunith said, wrapping an arm around Merlin. The baby stirred slightly, giving a grizzly moan, before he settled once more.

A tall man came into view, robes bunched up in one hand as he moved through the trees to stand in front of Hunith.

"Not many are brave enough to seek help of the druids," he commented, narrowing his eyes. "I don't-"

"Don't be ridiculous," an elderly man chided, stepping out from the bushes. "Come on my dear, let's get you settled in and see to the babe. A precious little thing by the looks at it and you can tell us what you need."

The druids were kind, just as Balinor had told her. They listened to her fears about Merlin, helped her devise ways of keeping his magic hidden and even asked her to stay. Hunith had simply smiled, shaking her head. She couldn't stay with the druids - she wanted Merlin to have a normal life. As much as she hated to say it, living with the druids would do them no good. Hunith had seen the way a few of them had looked at Merlin, as if he was a gift from the gods, and she wanted her son to experience a life as normal as possible.

Besides, there was always the chance that Balinor might return, whatever reality dictated. If she stayed in Ealdor then Hunith might, one day, see her love again.

"He's a talented boy," a voice said, low and sultry. Hunith jumped, spinning where she sat in her tent and looked over to the open door. Aglain was there and she flushed slightly, overwhelmed by his commanding presence.

He'd be a leader, Hunith thought. One day, he'd be a leader.

Aglain was easy to talk to. He listened to Hunith's worries and it was so, so easy to like him. Hunith knew that it was too soon after Balinor, but it didn't stop her inviting him in of the evening, when Merlin was fast asleep after playing with other children all day.

"He's a good child," Aglain said one night, sipping from his cup of water as Hunith served up stew for the two of them.

"He is," she said fondly, looking over to the little cot in the corner.

They ate their dinner in silence, sharing coy looks over broth, until Aglain stood. Hunith walked him ot the door and, in a moment of bravado, reached up on her tip-toes and kissed him softly. He was warm and smooth-faced, different to Balinor - though Hunith had sworn she'd stop comparing every man she knew to him.

They had to keep their trysts a secret. Nothing more than kissing took place, upon Hunith's worry of Merlin, but Aglain was quick to uphold her stipulations. He was a respectable man and Hunith wished in every way that she could fall in love with him.

Winter turned to spring and Hunith knew she'd outstayed her welcome. Ealdor would need her again and, aside from Aglain, there was nothing to keep her with the druids. But even Aglain wasn't enough and Hunith moved with the seasons, Merln gurgling on her back and her hear lighter than it had been when she'd left.

For a while, everything was okay. Merlin kept his magic in check and Hunith helped around the village. She slotted back in perfctly, her friends still eager to help her just as much as she helped them. Everything was good, Merlin had William for a friend and Hunith could relax more, at least until Merlin hit an unruly patch.

He wasn't wild or rude, but his anger occasionally caught the better of him. Merlin's eyes would flicker gold and Hunith began to worry. What if someone saw, what if someone knew? She couldn't bear it if anything happened to Merlin so she began watching him like a hawk, soothing down disputes and keeping him away from anger triggers.

There weren't many - Merlin really was a peaceful child at heart - but she couldn't risk it.

It was too much though. It was far too much for just one woman to bear and she needed an outlet. Though Hunith had left them, she kept correspondence with the druids, with a woman whose child Merlin had befriended. She wrote that a camp was situated on the boarder of Cenred's land, less than an hour's walk away from Ealdor.

And it didn't take a genius to figure out who was one of the head druids of the camp.

Aglain welcomed her with the smile of an old friend. Merlin was at William's (for if there was one family Hunith would trust with Merlin's secret it would be theirs) and she was free just this night. It wasn't hard to lay down beside Aglain and let him take her, let him consume his need and want while she took his comfort and strength. He was the beacon she needed and Hunith left just as dawn peaked, sated and relaxed for the first time in a long, long while.

It became a regular thing, once a month Hunith would leave Ealdor for the druid's camp, letting out all her loneliness and anguish, all her anger and frustration as she rode Aglain. In turn, he sunk into her with his duty and honour, with his grief of those he'd lost and his hope, kissing her neck with hopes for a new future.

It had to be a secret, of course it did. Hunith wasn't a druid and even though she had a powerful sorcerer for a son, a boy born with magic who would father a legend, she wasn't one of them. They'd never protect her if her village found out about her lover, or at least not in the way she wanted.

What Hunith wanted... well, she wanted to stay in her home. It held so many memories and if anyone found out about her and Aglain then she'd have to leave. And that didn't even touch on what might happen to Merlin, so as far as Hunith was concerned it was better to keep it a secret. She had more to protect than herself and though she needed this, it was something she could go without.

As Merlin grew older, Hunith's visits to Aglain's camp dwindled. He also had committments - just as she'd predcited, he became a leader. On one night, when the moon was full and fat of light, they met, greeting each other greedily with kisses. It was only after they'd devoured their fill, lying naked beside each other on the tent floor, that Aglain spoke.

"We're moving," he said softly, tracing Hunith's cheek with one hand. "Away, too far away."

She understood and was grateful when he didn't ask her to follow. Hunith couldn't follow, not when she needed to stay in Ealdor. She had a hope that had never died and even Aglain knew of that, though she'd never said, just as she'd never asked about the lonely look in his eyes, though she wondered if his love had been slaughtered by Uther's men or left just as Balinor had.

In their own way, though, they loved each other. They didn't need committment or obligations, they were what they were. When the sun dawned, Hunith would leave, slip into the day and forget about their relationship, but here in the night she could let him pull her from her loneliness and be her lover. They could save each other this night and tomorrow they'd look for other ways, Aglain turning to lead his people and Hunith to teaching her son.

Tomorrow though. That was all for tomorrow.
