Inside the house Arthur was worried. It had seemed an age since Merlin went outside for some fresh air. He knew he needed to give his mate space but he wouldn’t be happy until Merlin was back inside sand the two of them were together. Until then Arthur's world wouldn't feel right.

“It'll be fine,” Gwaine said, noticing the way Arthur was staring at the door. “He's your mate. He feels that, even if he doesn't know what it means.”

“I hope you're right,” Arthur said. “I can't lose him.”

“You won't,” Leon said. “He's told all of us how much he likes you.”

That made Arthur feel better. He knew his pack would tell him the truth. They all seemed it like Merlin and they all felt that Merlin was clearly feeling the human equivalent of meeting his true mate.

Arthur glanced at the clock. It had been ten minutes since Gwaine had come back inside. He felt something was wrong. Merlin was in trouble, he could sense it.

“I'm going out,” Arthur said. “Merlin should have been back before now.”

The whole pack, well bar Kilgharrah who still hadn't made an appearance, went with him. They seemed to recognise of their Alpha was concerned about his mate something really was wrong. They trusted in his judgement.

As soon as they got outside Arthur knew his instincts had been right. There was no sign of Merlin. He tried to catch his scent, work out what happened but then he smelt something familiar and very unwelcome.

“Valiant,” he growled. “He was here.”

“Would he risk coming so close?” Lancelot asked.

The other scented the air. “He was here,” Gwaine said. “And odds are he took Merlin.”

The idea that his greatest enemy had his mate sent Arthur into a frenzy, Rational thought fled. His mate was in trouble, in danger, he had to save him. He said nothing but shifted quickly and began to set off, following the scent of Valiant and Merlin. He didn’t know where it would lead he just knew he had to find Merlin, and soon.

As he set off he left the calls of his pack behind him.
