“Arthur…” he says, his voice trailing off when Arthur’s eyes meet his. They are dull and lifeless, all the spark and vigour faded into nothingness. It breaks his heart to see him like this.
“You should get some rest,” he says, knowing full well what the answer will be even as the words are coming out of his mouth. It comes as no surprise when Arthur simply shakes his head and lowers his eyes again.
Merlin hovers for a moment, considering what to do before he crosses the room and sits down beside Arthur.
“At least lie down,” he coaxes, already reaching for the laces of Arthur’s shirt. “You don’t have to go to sleep, just rest. Please?”
He hates how limp and compliant Arthur is, allowing Merlin to manoeuvre and undress him with no resistance at all. He even lets Merlin tuck him in, eyes fixed blankly on the ceiling as Merlin pulls the sheets and blankets over him.
“It wasn’t your fault,” Merlin says softly when he is satisfied that Arthur is comfortable. “No one could have known this would happen.”
Arthur laughs. It is a dry and bitter sound that chills Merlin to his core.
“She knew,” Arthur says flatly. “That was her gift after all, seeing things before they happened.”
Merlin has no answer to that. He’d known about Morgana’s ability long before she revealed it to everyone else. He’d thought it would be best for her it was kept a secret but now he’s not so sure. He’d give anything to spare Arthur the pain he’s going through right now.
“Maybe this was meant to happen.” He suggests it gently, trying to reassure himself as much as Arthur.
“Meant to happen?” Arthur repeats incredulously, his voice as cracked and broken as his spirit. “Merlin, her dreams have driven her insane. She tried to kill me because she thought I was going to harm the son she hasn’t even given birth to yet. She’s not even pregnant!”
Merlin sighs. “I know.”
“Just, leave me alone,” Arthur says with a dismissive wave of his hand. “Go and help Gaius or something.”
Merlin shakes his head. “I’m not leaving you, Arthur. Please, just tell me what you need. There’s nothing I can do for Morgana but maybe I can help you.”
“I don’t need your help, Merlin. Just go away.”
“I won’t. If you want me to leave you’ll have to get up out of that bed and force me.”
Arthur doesn’t move, as Merlin suspected. The prince lies quietly for a few moments and then sighs. “I need to forget. Merlin, can you help me forget?”
He can, but he won’t.
“I can help you forget for a little while,” he says softly and Arthur doesn’t reply when Merlin slips into bed beside him. As Merlin brushes his hand over Arthur’s bare chest the prince lays still.
“Just let me take care of you,” Merlin whispers as he moves his hand down between Arthur’s legs. He can’t help but smile when Arthur hisses and arches into his touch. At least there are still some things that get a reaction.
“Do you like that?” He purrs as he starts to stroke Arthur, feeling him grow hard under his ministrations.
Arthur lets out a low groan which Merlin takes to mean ‘yes’. He loves the way Arthur feels beneath his hand. He’s warm and hard and very much responsive Merlin’s strokes and caresses. It reassures Merlin that, in time, Arthur will recover from his loss.
Arthur comes with a choked cry, spilling into Merlin’s hand before falling him on the bed. There are tears rolling down his cheeks and Merlin kisses them away.
“I’m glad you’re here, Merlin,” Arthur whispers as they lie side by side in the dark.
There’s nowhere else Merlin would rather be.
