I did mean to start & end this year here as a kind of apocalypse log. Story of how it all happened Not that I don't still have apocalyptic anticipations, but the spring...
It's been really wonderful. I've been lifed-up & motivated. Mowed the grass and everything. Now to just figure out how to deal with this fallen tree in my yard...
I got all those seeds planted, that's an optimistic thing to do right? You don't plant flower seeds if you really think trouble's coming do you...
A lot of just half-formed thoughts. I'm trying to save my focus to write this book that came to me.
I'll tell you about it. So my first thought was - classic style SF. What if I made up one magic thing & then figured out how it could affect things if it was real. I landed on teleportation. I believe that spaceflight is not a realistic method of interplanetary exploration given the distances & limitations involved. But, I want interplanetary stories so teleportation. The real challenge when writing these things is the difficulty behind not just writing encyclopedia entries about the imaginary industries you've invented. You have to put these words in the mouths of characters, they have to explain things sparingly & let the readers put things together for themselves how they like them. I started with a little story about how I imagine machine-mediated anarcho-confucianism could be. Now I'm into malthusian-apostolic catholicism.
I have ten ideas about future societies, well, optimistic future societies. I was thinking - well, write a little story about the place to give a sense to players but it came out well enough that I wanted to keep at it, so I'm doing that now.
Probably take a long, long walk down to the museum this evening. See the world, live out in it & try hard not to think about how much better off I'd be if I lived someplace with nice, steady weather.
