Not cut out for this

King was not a nurse. He was not someone who could properly take care of someone who was sick. Yet here he was, taking care of Billy while Fraser made the trip back to the compound for help. If taking care of Billy is what this could be called anyway. King was mostly just watching Billy sleep. If he were lucky, Billy would just stay that way and ( Read more... )

It was hot, way too fucking hot, and Billy let out a weak, tired sigh as he forced his eyes to open. It took him a while to register the ceiling, and the lights, and the bed he lay on. Fuck, he was still in the outpost then.

"Fraser?" Billy murmured, trying to lift his head. "You there?" Everything felt hazy and distant, and Billy had to force his eyes to stay open.

"Fraser's gone," King said. He was sitting on the empty bed next to Billy's, as close as he dared to get. Billy was sick and needed space, and King was glad to give it. In King's mind, it was just easier to keep his distance until Billy asked for something.

Still, King wondered if Billy could understand him in this condition. Probably not. "He'll be back though," King added as an afterthought. It might've alarmed Billy to know that Fraser wasn't there anymore and King didn't want that.

Billy swallowed, one leg moving on the bed as he tried to sit up, but he didn't get very far before he flopped back onto the bed. "Where is he?" What if Fraser had wandered outside and a dinosaur had gotten him? How would they save him from a dinosaur? "We have to rescue him," he mumbled.

"He went to get help," King said. "He'll be fine."

King didn't know that of course, but he had to say something. For all he knew, Fraser was long dead. King doubted that though and wasn't about to count him out. Fraser was a mountie after all.

"Just lay down. Take it easy."

Billy looked like he was going to protest, but he went still again, eyes wide open as they tried to focus on King's face. Billy's pupils were dilated and dark, hardly any blue showing at all, and his face was damp with sweat.

"You're here ..."

"Yeah," King said, meeting Billy's gaze without a problem. Billy looked buzzed out of his mind and King wondered what the hell he was thinking in there. Probably mistaking King for Joe or some crazy shit like that. That would be the icing on the cake as far as King was concerned. "Try to get some sleep."

"No," Billy said automatically. "No, I don't want to."

"Fine, then don't," King said easily enough, and suddenly felt really fucking tired, not knowing what to do in this situation. "Just rest then." King rubbed a hand over his face and wondered if it were possible for him to be able to get some rest too. He hadn't attempted to lie down yet for fear of falling asleep, but he had wanted to. A lot.

Billy just continued to watch King, blinking glassy, somewhat damp looking eyes at him. "You look sleepy," he finally said. "You should rest. I promise not to die while you do."

"Oh yeah, that's comforting," King said back, dropping his hand to look back at Billy. "And no, I don't think so, you might get up to something."

What that something was, King didn't know, but he wasn't about to take a nap while Billy lay there looking like shit. Whatever King was feeling probably wasn't half as bad as whatever Billy was going through.

"You rest."

"No, no more sleep, bad fucking dreams," Billy said, shaking his head adamantly, flopping it a bit on the pillow. "Like I'm being buried alive, no. No more sleep."

He tugged weakly at the collar of shirt. It was so hot.

"Well, is there anything I can get you?" King asked, watching as Billy flopped around. He couldn't imagine what, though, other than a throwing a bucket of ice water on the guy.

"Water?" Billy asked, licking his dry lips. And he tried to sit up again, and this time managed it, despite the fact that his head spun dangerously.

King watched Billy sit up warily. "Yeah," he said, getting up and going over to the side of Billy's bed. He picked up the empty glass that was on the floor next to the bowl and rag that Fraser used to soak Billy's head. "I'll get you some more." He pointed at Billy with it. "Lay down and relax. I'll be right back."

After all that effort to sit up, Billy didn't want to just lay down again, so he slumped back against the wall, his eyes closed, and his hands limp at his sides. Maybe the water would help him, his mouth felt awfully dry, and he was hot all over. He was glad King was there.

When it seemed like Billy wasn't going to do much else other than slump there, King nodded and turned, heading out of the dormatory to get Billy some more water. He headed towards the kitchen he had seen upon entering and turned on the sink, making sure the water ran cold before getting Billy some more water.

Ignoring any weird scrabbly noises coming from one of the cupboards, King headed back, making sure to close the dormatory door behind him. Then went over to the side of Billy's bed and handed him the glass of water. "Hey," he said, to get Billy's attention.
