Character Application
Character Name [Canonly Written]: Shizuo Heiwajima (Given, Family. Common Western); 平和島 静雄; Heiwajima Shizuo (Family, Given. Common Eastern.)
Series: Durarara!!
Gender: Male
The Item: Butler uniform with purple lens sunglasses. If not allowed all of it, just the glasses.
Point with which your character has been taken from canon: Before episode 16. So he hasn't accepted his strength/power yet.
Personality Before there's any misunderstanding, Shizuo hates violence. He'd always hated violence, really. Unfortunately as a child, he'd lost whatever was supposed to control the rage and adrenaline in his body. While in situations that'd get any boy upset and want to fight, there was a haze that'd just have the extreme violence... happen. However, he hates violence. It just happened, and there was no control over it. Which lead to both he and the things around him to break. Really, the thing that he had wanted from the beginning was to live a peaceful life. It's just that, between his temper and Izaya, it never really had the chance to happen any more. It's just a good thing that, by this point, it was easier to let go of the anger if given an excuse by someone he knows.
To put it simply, while Shizuo's a good man, he has a violently dangerous temper that even he despises. It's given him a goal to become stronger, and hopefully strong enough to control the rage that pours out. Unfortunately, there are plenty of people who know how to spark the temper. Not just people like Izaya, who see people as toys, but those that are rotten with their personalities. Other triggers include those that attack first, say annoying things for too long, and those that have attacked his friends. Despite this deep and instinctual hatred towards Izaya, however, it doesn't spread out to associates of such people. While Shizuo hates Izaya, those the bastard works with aren't going to receive the same treatment. In fact, while Celty works for him quite often, Shizuo considers her a friend.
While seeming to be casual and distant, there are those he respects, like Celty who's always been there (having been involved with Shinra's family since he was four,) and have a rough but solid relationship which is almost akin to friendship. It's those people that he could confide in, and not explode when they wonder what's caused him to be in a bad mood. Of course, in those bad moods one might want to keep distance. Even without it, Shizuo will announce that he holds no responsibility and the person that provoked him has no right to complain about whatever happens next.
Due to having an instinct to hate 'rotten' people, Shizuo would probably be a wild card in Veles. The natives would probably end up on the receiving end of his temper more than often enough, if they decide he's a target like most Gate Walkers, but anyone abrasive enough would end up causing a similar situation. There's no particular motivation that'd keep Shizuo from going to the otherwise somewhat muted state. Considering there's no Izaya, there might even be some degree of tolerance for the city.
Powers/Abilities CANON: While mental skills and abilities are unknown, Shinra is best known for his superhuman, yet natural strength. Amusingly enough, he's completely human, despite the seemingly unlimited strength that's exhibited in fits of rage. The anime and novels both liken this to 'adrenaline power,' that allows humans to perform extraordinary acts in extreme situations. Like a woman lifting a truck to get to her child, or something like that. Being able to rip various road signs out of the cement, lift vending machines and trucks, and even dozens of people, seems to even out the lack of training when it comes to fighting. Due to always hunting after Izaya in high school, and also probably linked to this 'adrenaline power,' he's also managed parkour moves that surpass a human level.
Throughout the years, due to the short temper and acts of rage that have repeatedly caused injuries, Shizuo's body has a high tolerance and resistance to injuries. Even as a teenager, he managed to get hit by a truck and walk away with no more injuries than from before the accident. He's not invulnerable, as cutting and stabbing works just fine against his body, though he'll grit his teeth still, but the stress from impact and a high level of weight doesn't seem to do more than slow him down. For example, he was once stabbed with a pen in each thigh, and a third right through his hand. After dealing with the attacker, he casually considered how to handle the pen in his hand first. Knowing pulling the pen out would cause bleeding, instead of going to a doctor, like Shinra, the first thoughts ended up being to get some bandages instead.
Powers/Abilities AU: Dear lord... Fortunately, or unfortunately, all of Shizuo's abilities are from conditioning since a young age. Somehow he's actually a 'normal' human being. The closest thing to unnatural that could be reduced would actually be extending his temper somewhat. This would happen naturally, and not from the gate, simply because Izaya isn't even in Veles, which would improve is temperament. Seeing as his strength is linked to fits of rage, out of this he'd have a believable capacity. As in strong, but not insanely strong. With a higher tolerance, he wouldn't be accessing that strength so easily. Luckily, save for the junkyard, there's less for Shizuo to rip out of the ground. The walls and buildings would be too large, and there aren't any vehicles going around the city. So there's less around for him to be picking up while in a rage, because there isn't anything around that could reach the limits of his strength. He's really limited by his limited setting and change in population more than the gate.
History: Shizuo grew up just like most other kids; normal boy, with a younger brother (Kasuka.) It was in those childhood years that something snapped. For the first time, it was when his brother had eaten the putting cup Shizuo written his claim on. Just like that, without even realizing what had happened, his temper blew and he lifted the fridge with the intention of using it against his sibling. However, unable to do so, the weight (and the plug pulling out of the outlet and smacking him in the face,) fizzled the blind rage leaving him with injuries from lifting such a heavy object. From that point on, from fellow classmates teasing him, to strangers on the street, he'd lose his mind very easily and end up trying to lift something heavy during the fit to use against the cause of the target. Constantly bones had broken, but the temper hadn't lessened and the seemingly inhuman strength continued.
Eventually, he'd come to accept that there was no way to control either the short temper or the strength. Despite how his body would keep 'breaking,' he'd tossed away whatever kept him trying to stay in control, as well as no longer caring about the injuries he'd always end up getting from these episodes. After all, it only seemed to make him stronger when the healing had gone through (which fascinated his friend, Shinra, the entire time.) During one of the periods where his arm was broken, he met a lady that was taking care of a bakery that was on the way home from school. With concern for his constant injuries, the lady offered both Shizuo and his brother milk, sparking his first crush. One evening, while passing by the bakery, the siblings saw a group of men harrassing the lady in the shop. By the time he came out of the red haze, the shop was completely ruined and all of the men were knocked out at the very least. Even Shizuo knew he went too far that time.
Due to the damage, the rest of the students (save for Shinra,) kept their distance, and the lady in the bakery was also in trouble for the incident by how it looked. At that point, it seemed he had only Kasuka and Shinra that were willing to be around him. Though it seemed even Shinra ended up being taken out of the Heiwajima's lives.
Then high school came around, when he and Shinra were both accepted in to Raira Academy. Unfortunately, this was also when Izaya had come in to the picture. Izaya was a friend of Shinra's from middle school, but something about him spawned Shizuo's hatred for the boy instantly. Almost immediately, Izaya had started setting up situations where large groups of people would go after Shizuo, though that was more unfortunate for them due to the terrifying strength. The fight that first day, and Izaya saying that he was amusing and would be fun, like Shizuo was a toy, started the first time they tried to fight to the death. It was also the first time that someone had injured Shizuo directly, which seemed to only deepend the hatred. It was a fight that ended with Shizuo getting hit by a truck after chasing Izaya through Ikebukuro, and the latter paying off the truck driver for the good job.
It was the first day of a very troublesome high school career. Not just people Shizuo had fought with before, but complete strangers were coming by to fight him. By instinct, this had him hunt down Izaya and run through the entire city very often. By the time he graduated, Shizuo realized that these attempts on his life were thanks to Izaya pulling the strings. Per Shizuo's lack of luck, however, the bastard had already disappeared.
After graduating, he attempted to get several jobs. Actually, getting the jobs wasn't the problem, so much as keeping them. Due to the dangerously short temper, and huge strength, Shizuo never held on to his jobs for very long. Though there seemed to be one job that he was able to keep, as a bartender. One evening his brother, now an actor by the name Hanejima Yuhei, visited at the bar with boxes of bartender uniforms encouraging the current employ. It seemed that whenever something good happened, his luck had to sour and even it out, though. Soon after the police had shown up to detain him for a crime that he didn't commit! Of course, this was something Izaya had him framed for, and he disappeared from Ikebukuro again. Which was about the time the police realized that Shizuo was innocent and had him released.
His job was as good as gone, but a new one came up right in front of that station. Tom, his senior in middle school by one year, recruited him to help with debt collection. While a job he didn't enjoy in the beginning, it was one that Shizuo had gotten comfortable with. It's been the only one that he was able to lose his temper and still have a job afterward. Over time, Shizuo somehow become well-acquainted with Izaya's sisters, as well as a member of Dollars; a gang that quicky gained notoriety in Ikebukuro, but also had no color associated with them. Not much changed after that, with the routine chaos before showing up in Veles. Save for the fact that Izaya had been showing up in Ikebukuro more often...
RP Sample [First Person]: [Looks around at the guards, keeping a neutral expression and tone for the time being.]
Oi, this isn't Ikebukuro. Did that bastard Izaya put you up to this?
[Takes a step forward, only to pause when getting greeted by the butt end of a guards rifle. Twitches, slowly looking towards the guard.]
Obviously you knew there was a chance that if you hit me in the right place, I would die. That's why you aimed for the head. So you can't complain about what I do to you, right?
[Starts lifting up the guard that struck him by the front of the uniform. This is obviously the thing to do, for someone that can't think clearly for the moment.]
Why do you play this character? I've been toying with the idea of playing Shizuo for a while. I figured someone like him would be hilarious fun to have in Veles.
