Title: Temper Author: cruisedirector Rating: PG Word Count: ~1100 Summary: The secret is control. For everyone. Note: According to a biographer, King George VI once threw a sword in a fit of anger and nearly hit his steward.
Ouch. That final 'Thank you' of Bertie's says so much -- it's the shock and remorse mixed up with the gratitude and wonder that Lionel will stay with him even after something like this. Very subtle and lovely!
Thank you! This wound up being angstier than I intended, though in retrospect of course it needed to be angsty. I could not get that image of him flinging a sword out of my mind.
Watched the movie again last night with people who hadn't seen it before, and came running over here to see if there was any new fic. This was the perfect story to find because while watching this time (it had been a while) I focused most of all on Lionel and his ordeal, including the "break-up scene." I really don't know how Geoffrey Rush does that thing with his face, but he can express entire operatic arias without moving an eyebrow and it's absolutely devastating and heartbreaking!
So reading this was like continuing that connection. But, as always, you show us the hearts of both characters and my heart goes out to Bertie, too.
I love the way you show us the Lionel's heart full of love, tempered by caution and his own feelings, and Bertie, still so trapped, but so shot through with yearning.
Thanks so much! I was thinking about that anecdote about George VI throwing a sword that almost hit his steward (this was on the Canada trip) and what Colin Firth said about how he bet there were more wobbles in their trust even past the event of the film, and something demanded to be written. I haven't watched the movie in a month -- clearly I am due. *g* Glad you are still loving it as much!

Thank you for this, just when I wanted it.
