OK as of tomorrow at around noon my favorite day will take place - that's right the Grammy predictions! However, last year's Grammy’s turned out to be really flawed in their decisions and this year will probably be no exception. Instead of simply handing the "Album of the year" trophy to U2 for their emotional "All that you can't leave behind" they flushed their votes to the stale and obtuse "O Brother where 'art soundtrack" proving once again that intelligence often doesn't rule our world, but mere money and power. So before the Grammy board releases their choices on the BIG 4 (Best new artist, Best song, best record, and album of the year) I've decided to put my two cents in and share with y'all what exactly the Grammy’s would look like if an intelligent person where to vote, and then I'll show you what the Board decided to cast.
Some general analysis before I get into the BIG 4.
Expect the Grammy's to be dominated by one force this year: Bruce Springsteen.
His album recorded with the East Street Band entitled "The Rising" stands above and beyond any other album released in 2002. However, while this album is phenomenal the songs of it may not be able to hold their own if looked at as a separate entity. That being said, The Boss will rack up about 11 nods but most likely only come out with about 3 or 4. Don't discredit him though, he'll win the big ones, however he only eligible single "The Rising" will not stand by itself.
In the POP category we can expect to see the following bands/artists with some mark:
Bruce Springsteen and the E street Band - ("The Rising")
NSYNC (for girlfriend, it was released in 2002)
Santana (the Grammy’s love this guy) - ("The game of love")
Avril Lavgene - ("Almost every song you hear on the radio")
Justin Timberlake - ("That really annoying song where he sounds like Michael Jackson with his legs crossed)
The White Stripes - For any song where you heard only a guitar and drums and a guy who sounded like he was passing kidney stones.
Nelly - "hot in herre"
Others who may sneak in are:
The Rolling Stones - "Don't Stop
U2 - "Electrical Storm"
The Hives - "Hate to say I told you so"
Matchbox 20 - "Disease"
The Strokes - "Someday"
Norah Jones - "Don't know why"
Don't be surprised if Norah Jones sneaks into this category as her music is much more Jazz, but marketed as Pop. If she does you can kiss the competition good bye.
In ROCK, we'll see Dave Grohl battle none other than Dave Grohl:
Expect:
Foo Fighters
Nirvana
Queens against the stone age
Rolling Stones
Bruce Springsteen
The Hives
The Vines
The White Stripes
Some wild cards:
Avril Lavgene
Audioslave
Bon Jovi - but don't count on him, we already have one person from NJ god forbid we need another one
Expect Foo Fighters hard raw sound to come out the victor in these awards, and be happy if they do because I don't think they stand a chance against anyone in the final four.
I was going to do Rap and alternative but it is pretty obvious who will dominate those areas - expected Eminem to beat out everybody by his more mature "Eminem show." Beck will crush the competition in alternative but no one really cares about Beck so they will probably just show that award over a commercial prompt (remember Beck though he'll appear later).
THE BIG FOUR:
Best new artist
My predictions (probability):
Avril Lavgene (95%)
Norah Jones (99%)
The Hives (85%)
Justin Timberlake (60%)
N.E.R.D. (45%)
The Grammy’s may agree with me here. They will like to throw in some urban level into this category so Pharell Williams will get his side project NERD the nod into this category. Justin Timberlake minus his other band members was received very well and should also get into this category.
I personally feel that this category belongs to the Hives - for their garage Swedish rock. Its raw, its hard, its not easy to swallow, but the Swedes may just save rock and roll and an award to them would be a nice suggestion.
However, expect the ladies to take home this one - Norah Jones being the front runner. The Grammy's like an unknown and annoying chick to take this home (read: Natalie Imbruglia, Alicia keys), so Norah will not every know why she sucks because she'll win this award.
BEST Record (the single award, goes to the band)
"The Rising" - Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band (60%)
"Complicated" - Avril Lavgene (60%)
"Don't Know Why" - Norah Jones (60%)
"Lost Cause" - Beck (35%)
"Hot in Herre" - Nelly (70%)
Tough race, it should go to the serene mood of "Lost cause" by Beck however I think he'll be over looked, and the Grammy will go to Avril Lavgene crowning her the new queen of unfair victories.
Song of the Year - (song writers award)
"The Rising" - Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band (90%)
"Complicated" - Avril Lavgene (50%)
"Don't Know Why" - Norah Jones (80%)
"Lost Cause" - Beck (70%)
"All my Life" - Foo Fighters (30%)
In all honesty we know who this is going to - The Boss, he'll take this one home. However if for some reason the Avril and Norah loves move their votes to Beck expect an upset.
My favorite - "Album of the Year"
"Let Go" - Avril Lavgene
"Sea Change" - Beck
"The Rising" - Bruce Springsteen
"Brainwashed" - George Harrison
"Eminem Show" - Eminem
Although George Harrison may be a sentimental favorite, it has got to go to the Boss his post 9-11 album is a breath of fresh air, and the board knows it - no funny business here. I am almost 100% sure on these predictions, although the Grammy board has been known to do crack so we'll see tomorrow
