Hmmm Phones......

Ok so it appears that I am in the market for a new cell, and possibly new carrier. I have been with Cingular since 2000, and although I always had problems getting service at U of M Dearborn, I think they have been rather not bad. I kinda sorta looked at Verizon last week, but not too terribly impressed. So I am looking for suggestions. BEFORE you ( Read more... )

Verizon has a deal right now (as long as they don't sell out) for a V710 and a bluetooth earpeace for 70$. The bluetooth alone is worth 50$. The phone is excellent and anyone with half a brain concerning cell phone companies will tell you Verizon's network is number 1.

Keith, Verizon is a perfect choice for you. I was with them for 4 years and never dropped a call and always could hear properly. You will not find any carrier that can even come close to matching Verizon's service.

The only reason I left was because I wanted a fancier phone than they had. Since you are taking a minimalist approach in this respect, I would wholeheartedly recomend then to you.

The only thing you may not like is that you should expect to pay more $$$ for less minutes than compared to some other carriers. Its still very affordable, so its not really a big deal....

Cingular put up a tower in the area cause since the summer I get calls in buildings on campus....even the DCE. Their phones aren't too bad. I wouldn't recomend my phone cause you don't need all the extras, but it does have a decent port for a headset and speaker phone. You know the coverage and it is not a clam shell, but all the Nokia phones I've ever seen/had hold up to abuse and work all the time. If you did want to look at it, I have a Nokia 6800.

I was with Verizon, it was my first phone when I was 16. The major thing that sucked about it was that my plan was $45/month, however, they charged me $.10 for every gaddamn call that I recieved or made. It was a 'connection' fee. That and other random unnecessary fees could jump my monthly bill to as high as $70 a month, even if I didn't go over my minutes. It was ridiculous.

I left and joined AT&T, which has since been aquired by Cingular. When I was with AT&T, however, I did notice that I had a lot more dropped calls than I ever did with Verizon.

So my point is that Verizon probably has pretty good network. Just, before you sign up, make sure they don't charge that ridiculous 'connection' fee. As to an actual phone, I can't particularly recommend. I usually buy whatever's on sale.
