I was serving at the bar today and a news reports about the volcanic ash cloud was on the tv behind me. I heard someone say that "we should just nuke Iceland, that should do it". Seriously, there are people who believe that nuking the place will stop the eruptions. I really hope he was joking (though I don't think he was).
Surely a nuclear explosion would only make things worse. For a start, instead of a volcanic ash cloud, we'd have a radioactive ash cloud. If that didn't bring down planes it would definitely cause a lot of radiation sickness.
Blowing more holes in the volcano would probably lead to more eruptions and therefore more ash. Even if the debris from the explosion clogged up the volcano then the pressure inside would just be released somewhere else. Another eruption would just happen somewhere else.
Millions would be killed by the explosion and radiation. There'd be riots when people get over the shock of realising that some idiot actually ordered a nuclear missile launch for no reason. Civilisation on our little island would fall.
All this because some moron thought nukes were the way to solve his mild inconvenience.
Sometimes I really hate people.
This is what I was thinking about when I should have been working.
