Why is google rolling out an SSL enabled search engine? (https://encrypted.google.com/) . Are people really that concerned about people snooping on what terms they search for ( Read more... )

They launched that in response to China's attack on them. Keeping searches private is significant when your Government is spying on you. Combined with viewing the Google cache it is pretty useful to avoid being arrested.

Furthermore with modern processors possessing encryption accelerating instructions, adding explicit privacy to web browsing makes good sense while not requiring an excessive burden on service providers. Take Firesheep for an example: forcing SSL connections to Facebook is the only current method to beat it.
