maybe this time
yunho/jaejoong, rain/jaejoong, yoochun/junsu
romance, angst / pg13 / oneshot
Comparisons are easily done once you’ve had the taste of perfection. Yunho only realized the truth to that until he let the best thing that has ever happened to him go.
“What the hell is the sun dance, Yunho?” inquires Jaejoong one afternoon. He could not help but noticethat everytime Rain is around, Yunho would start dancing the odd dance, and somehow, it looks like it’s some sort of a ritual.
Yunho grins, feeding his son a spoonful of rice. “Not telling.”
“It’s a dance that makes you happy.” Hyunchul pipes in, waving the spoon in hand. Jaejoong has invited them over for lunch because it’s a national holiday and both he and Hyunchul have their day off.
Jaejoong quirks a brow. “Rain makes you happy? As in Jihoon?”
“It’s quite the opposite, actually.” Yunho replies with a scoff. “I’m sorry but I can’t bring myself to like him. For you, I mean. But if I were to temporarily forget the fact that he has the hots for you and is slowly making his way into your heart then maybe I could get to like him as a person.”
“Okay Yunho, stop. Let’s not ruin our day.”
Yunho nods only because he does not want to start an argument between him and Jaejoong. They are already friends and if he forces anything on him, he might just ruin everything.
Slowly but surely, he reminds himself.
“Don’t worry Uncle Yunho, I like you better than Uncle Rain.” Hyunchul whispers although it’s just the same volume as his normal speaking voice. “Don’t tell him I said that!”
He grins.
That’s right, slowly but surely indeed.
It takes three months for Yunho to realize that he needs to figure out his next move. They cannot stay in Virginia forever. Howon is expected to be back at school next month. He can stay for another four months because lady luck was on his side when he tried to file a paternity leave and the higher ups bought his story about his pregnant wife.
“I am not going back to Korea without Jaejoong.” He tells himself as he walks by himself to the park. He needs an alone time. Everything is starting to stress him out. It’s as if no matter what he does and how hard he tries, Jaejoong would never budge. “He said he cannot risk anything anymore,” he mumbles to himself, plopping down a vacant bench. He grits his teeth and before he knows it, tears are streaming down his face. “You are not worth the risk, Yunho. Just stop it.”
There have been countless of times when he thought of giving up, but when it happens, what he does is think of him and Jaejoong with their sons as one happy family and then he feels better again.
It’s as simple as that. But making that a reality is not as simple as it seems.
Burying his face in his hands, he sobs almost uncontrollably, uncaring of the curious passersby. A grown man is allowed to cry in public, right?
It almost feels like an eternity before he feels a hand wrapping around his shoulder and his face is suddenly pressed into someone’s stomach.
“Yunhoyah…” He stiffens. He tries to look upbut the other presses his face harder onto his stomach. “Please don’t cry.”
That just makes him cry harder. His sobs have gotten even more violent at the sound of Jaejoong’s voice. “I… I’m sorry J-jae… joongah…” he manages to say, voice muffled by Jaejoong’s shirt.
“Oh Yunho…”
Jaejoong running a hand through his hair helps him calm down. His sobs soon turn into hiccups. “I’m sorry.” he croaks out. “I was so desperate. I really wanted you back and I was intent on doing everything I could.” He supposes it’s alright to wrap his arms around Jaejoong’s middle so he does. He waits for him to push him away but he doesn’t. He sighs in relief. “I was so stupid back then. I only thought of myself. I… I’ve already explained my side months ago and honestly, I don’t know what to say anymore. You know, I was willing to spend a lifetime trying to win you back, but that would be another stupid move.” Surprisingly, he lets out a weak chuckle. “I would be selfish if I do that. Having me around all the time is giving you a hard time. I’ve been nothing but a nuisance since day one”
Jaejoong does not stop stroking his hair. He continues.
“I told myself I’d make you happy. Or at least try to. And I guess the only way I could actually do that is if I leave you alone. I hate Rain with a passion but if he is the one for you then who am I to take that away from you? Although my initial motive is to bring you back with me to Korea, seeing you live your life happily with your son and the other guy is enough for me. I’m going to stop being selfish. Like they said, if you love someone, you’ll let them go.” With much difficulty, he detaches himself from the silent Jaejoong and forces out a smile, his eyes glassy. “I’m letting you go now. Thank you for your time and for giving me a chance to be your friend again. Howon loves you, Jaejoong. I’ll make sure youboth stay in contact when we go back. Thank you for everything, really.” He chuckles as he wipes his tears with his hands. “Oh crap, I must look pathetic. How did you even find me here? Ah, doesn’t matter.” He stands up and forces out another smile. “Well, I’m off now. I’ll see you when I see you.” He turns on his heels to walk away only to be stopped by Jaejoong’s voice.
“I don’t want us to go to jail.”
He turns back around and frowns. “Excuse me?”
“Your wife. Divorce her, Yunho. I don’t want her to sue us or anything.”
“Wha-“
“You think Hyunchul would like the school Howon is in?”
“Jaejoong what a-“
“You’ll find us a new house, right? Because I cannot stay with your soon to be ex-wife in one roof. Hyunchul loves red. He’d like his room to be red. What is Howon’s favourite color?”
The tears that Yunho had managed to stop are now streaming down his cheeks. He takes big strides towards Jaejoong and pulls him in a bone-crushing hug. “Anything. Howon likes any color but he always says he likes green even if he cannot see it. Hyunchul will have his red room and I’m sure he’ll love school. He’ll make lots and lots of friends. I’ll take them both to school everyday while you make us breakfast. No one will go to jail. I’ve already drawn up divorce papers a month ago and I’m just waiting for her to send it back to me. And she will. She will, baby. Trust me, she will.”
“Howon…”
“No. She is not going to take him away from us. I’ve talked to her about it a week after I sent the papers. Said she’s too busy anyway and that she knows I can take care of him better than she can.”
“I love you, Yunho. As much as I don’t want to admit it, I don’t think I’ve ever stopped.”
Yunho showers his neck with kisses. “I love you more, love. I know I’ve said this a hundred times already but let me-“
“Spend forever to make it up to me for being an asshole?”
He chuckles, this time, not forced. “Exactly.”
“Good. Now let’s go to my house and continue our talk there because we’ve just made an hour worth of Korean drama moment right in the middle of the park.”
“So how did you find me? You weren’t stalking me, were you?” Yunho jokes as he wraps his arms tighter around Jaejoong. As soon as they arrived at Jaejoong’s house, the reunited couple wasted no time and cuddled on the latter’s bed, just like the old times.
Jaejoong playfully smacks him on the arm. “You passed by my shop and you looked so depressed it worried me so I closed my shop and followed you.”
“You shouldn’t have!”
“Really now?”
Yunho snorts. “Okay, fine, I’m really glad you did. Ecstatic. But baby, what made you change your mind? Last time I checked, you never wanted to talk to me about the matter because it would ruin your day.”
“I was simply avoiding it.” He smiles when Jaejoong laces their fingers. He gently squeezes his hand. “You should know that I almost had a panic attack when I saw you in my living room. What I said back then, I meant it. Well, not everything because Yunho, you are worth taking the risk. I was just scared of getting hurt again but I saw how determined and sincere you were. And I love how you get along so well with my son.”
“Our son.” Yunho corrects him. “I’m allowed to adopt him, right? I mean, he has always been my son, just not legally.”
“Of course. You’re his father. Always been. But please don’t tell me I could adopt Howon too, because as much as I’d love to, he still has a mother and I respect that.”
“I am so lucky to be given this second chance with you. I would never disappoint you in any way again. Trust me. I love you so much, Jaejoong.”
“I trust you.”
“What happens to Rain now?I remember you telling me that he’ll soon be your boyfriend.”
Jaejoong sighs. “I tried, but I couldn’t. Your presence made it harder for me. I don’t see myself with him in the future because you are there. All I could see is you. There is no future for me and him.”
He lifts Jaejoong’s chin with a finger and presses a soft kiss against his lips. It was a chaste and yet sincere kiss. Making love could wait. After all, they have all the time in the world to make up for the lost time.
“Mind telling me the real reason behind the sun dance now?”
“Well, you see, it’s performed when you want the rain to go away.” Jaejoong bursts out laughing at the revelation. “Admit it, it works all the time.”
“Yes. Yes it does.”
