Hey there guys. If you're a local you're already tired of me mentioning that I don't have cable anymore - "Oh look, it's Brian and he's mentioning he doesn't have cable - what a surprise". Yes - it's sorta that smug factor that comes with buying a hybrid car or recycling your coffee grounds as mulch... But yeah - I got rid of cable to save some money and because I just felt like I wouldn't miss it much. Funny enough, in general - I don't. With Netflix and my game consoles I've got plenty to watch and do.
But I still keep up with my favorite shows (LOST, Heroes, BSG, Ugly Betty, 30 Rock) - it's a little tougher keeping up with How I Met Your Mother and the Bravo reality shows but I get by.
And how do I do it? Well - for ABC shows I use a monster DVI to HDMI cable to just run my computer out to my TV. And for NBC shows I use Hulu through PlayOn MediaServer and I run that primarily on my xBox (it also works for PS3 and will soon be able to support the Wii as well). PlayOn gives you access to Hulu.com, CBS, ESPN, YouTube, and Netflix - not bad, eh? PlayOn in combination with the WinAmp portal pretty much allows me access to all kinds of nifty stuff.
As of today
PlayOn is out of Beta and for a short time you can pick it up for $29. After the 8th it will go to $39. They are aggresively looking to secure more portals (MTV, Comedy Central) and when I filled out my survey as a beta user I suggested Bravo, xTube, and Cartoon Network too.
So if you're looking for a decent media server check it out. You can
get the deal on the price by going here and just sending the email to yourself.
