The training went really well last night. They had moved everyone into a different room and it's *way* better for what we're doing. After talking for a few days about different aspects of support and techniques I finally let everyone log into the tools. And wow, that was an adventure. I made the mistake of having the system ask everyone to change their passwords once they logged in and created a lot of confusion. These are all temp accounts and really, I should have known better and made it a little easier to get in. We also had a few computers throw some exceptions over the Java so that slowed us down too. To the company's credit, they had a tech in who resolved the issue fairly quickly. Gives me confidence that there is solid knowledge in the building for sure.
So - we spent the evening going over the support console and I made sure that everyone understood that they didn't have to "get it" right here, right now. That I was going to go quickly and give them a lot of terms because it's more about getting that initial familiarity than total understanding at this point. It was a lot of fun. They even laughed at my jokes (well, some of my jokes - I really scored when I got the female trainees to smile - they are a hard sell!).
Odd and Cool India Workplace stuff:
We were in the middle of training and a guy came in with a can of air freshener and literally walked the entire way around the room spraying it. I guess it's normal because people didn't pay him much mind (until I did, and then they giggled some). Shiv had motioned to the guy that he didn't need to come in but I guess the guy is full dedicated because he didn't play him any notice. The room smelled fine beforehand really and of course my nose didn't react well to the spray... hehe
We were given these awesome choco flavored coffee type expresso drinks midway through. WOW - they beat the shit out of Monster. Two sips and I was UP!
And yes, we did our training from 6pm to 10pm as part of their 4pm to 2am schedule. When I left they were going into typing skills sessions and technical skills training. Go team!
We were monitoring one of my Home Team Rep's chats and that went well. The Rep was taking a different angle at supporting a user and I was IM'ing him while the Bangalore team watched. It was a great exchange and a great example. It helped to set the team at ease because they realized that they could have their own style. That they aren't going to be "Binder Monkeys".
Tonight we'll continue doing console training. Shiv and I are going to make plans for the weekend tonight too. Looking forward to getting out of the neighborhood and seeing more of the city at last!
