Just got home from the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club show (you know, the one that the Fratellis were supposed to be a part of) and I'm sort of scratching my head over the whole thing. I guess this was the first night of their tour and man, it really showed. The set was VERY uneven and just the order of the songs and song choices ended up with a pretty confused audience. They started strong with some great jangly rock, showing their musicianship and just tearing it up. And then, they sort of lost themselves in some slower, noodling, bland selections... Eventually they got back into an acceptable groove but they did it just in time to "end" the show... and by end, they all walked off and people left, and then one of the two main guys walked back on and played two Howl songs (which were great). And that was cool. Then he walked off and the other main guy walked on and played one Howl song (in the dark), stopped midway through the song and said "I can't play when I don't have a guitar" - still trying to figure that one out because, yeah, he had a guitar right there in his hands that he was playing on just moments before. So he finishes like a 12 minute funeral dirge and then they all come out for one great song and one shabby one and then they were done.
So yeah... when they were on it was inspired... and when they were off, it was a little sad... But was glad I went all the same - always good to see a show with
bearringsd.
