Med school update

Dec 17, 2006 21:52

2006 Interviews are over, although I have two more for Emory and Iowa in January. Thus, I think I will do a re-ranking of the schools I've seen:

1. (tie) UPenn and Case Western. Both have excellent research in parasitology and each has their strengths. Penn is by far and away the better medical school, has the best children's hospital in the world, and a gorgeous campus. They also have the largest immunoparasitology program in the world. If I got in (big if), I would be hard pressed to turn it down. On the other hand, Case has a great Center for Global Health with the opportunity for international field research. If I wanted to do work on the population level, this would be the place to go. Really, that's the only thing Case has got that Penn doesn't. Besides, Philly is a much cooler city than Cleveland.

3. Wisconsin. Largest microbiology program in the world. Good parasitology. Too cold, but Madison is a fun town with great beer.

4. Maryland. Global health is stronger than I expected. Want to leave Maryland, though.

5. Virginia. I liked the school, but I think I really fucked things up on my interview.

6. Baylor. Melissa's going to be so mad. A really good medical school, but their infectious disease program sucks. They haven't had someone get a phd in Virology and Microbiology in like 5 years. Plus, their main parasitologist is leaving.

7. Pittsburgh. Also a good medical school and good for transplantation biology and other immunology, but they sorta suck in terms of global health. Plus, their program starts June 1, meaning I don't get a vacation.
