If I had a Million Dollars...

I found out today that I'm not having a Christmas. At least, I'm not getting any presents. My Mom's made the magnanimous decision to put all of the money we'd be spending on presents to the victims of the recent Hurricanes. New Orleans and Mississippi need it (although Whit somehow believes that our community needs it even more) more than I do, but I couldn't help but feel a kind of "aw shucks" moment when I realized I wasn't getting new stuff in December, or at the very least, spending the money on a Ski Trip to North Carolina (which I had my heart set on, even if nobody else in the fam did).

So since I'm not getting a new 60 gig iPod with video capabilities and I won't be sliding down the slopes of Beech Mountain, I'm going to go ahead and make a wishlist of things I want (but probably don't need) and will never get. We'll start with the basics:

-the aforementioned 60 gig iPod. I kind of actually need it for school; I need a portable harddrive for my DA stuff... although I could just as easily get a refurbished late-model one without a color screen that would do the same job...
-while we're on an Apple kick, I'd like a $2500 Apple Powerbook G4 (unless they have G5's) decked with video editing software like Final Cut Pro HD. I've begun to miss having a laptop. I think, knowing what I know now, I shouldn't have blown all that money on the desktop. Dave would cane me for saying this, but to be honest, I barely use it to it's fullest. About the only thing it has over my old laptop that is put to practical use is the screen resolution. However, if I get smart about it, I can turn the tower into an all-purpose entertainment hub for TV, Movies, Music, etc. which leads me to my next thing
-I want that 22 inch monitor I had a chance to fool around with late in the summer. it's about 800 bucks and would go so nicely as a second screen. I'd use it for TV and get rid of my big one, which I have to work the entire arrangement of rooms around with.
-A new Camcorder, nay, a new digital camera. I want one of those big motherfuckers that take high quality shit. My camcorder's decided to start dying on me. I've had it for 3 years and I've barely used it, and now when I actually need to use it, it starts to screwing up. Go Figure. but I doubt the new camera would be much better; I'm not really well versed in everything a camera can do and it would probably sit in it's bag for years before I got around to using it again. I want to get my current one fixed because it's actually not that bad (it's mini DV), but I'm afraid that's going to cost me an arm and a leg.

That's really all I can think of right now. If I had just $8 grand to blow, I might be inclined to spend it on some of this. At the very least an iPod. I don't really need any of it, though, and I'm slowly figuring this out. Things that I bought and later found out I probably shouldn't have include, firstly, my old car (divine providence fixed that problem for me), my camcorder(although the 'rents gave it to me for christmas 3 years ago), my TV, my surround sound system, my computer, and a slew of other things I can't think of. I bought things because I thought I had to have them.

I think the most recent example was when I dropped $350 bucks this summer for a digital camera. There's no question that I actually needed a digital camera, but what type evaded me. Did I want one that I could easily slip into a pocket and take snapshots with? Or did I want one with which I can take professional quality shots? The one I went for seemed borderline professional and it was cheap (at least compared to other models), so I got it. The funny thing is, though it's big and bulky like a professional, but the quality of the images and the use of the camera usually revolve around snapshots. But then again, maybe it's just that I'm never satisfied with what I have. If I had a million dollars, maybe I'd buy both a 8 megapixel snapshot camera that'll slip in my pocket as well as an expensive professional camera that real photojournalists use that would never get any use, but in the off chance that it might, I'd just happen to have it lying around.

I'm really not quite sure what the point of this post was. Insomnia, I guess. Sorry.
