I'm so completely drained. Not in a bad way, but the tank is running on fumes. This weekend was really cool.
No disrespect intended to those who've run other games, or who I've RP'd with in other games, but Saturday's Mage game kicked my ass. This is the kind of game that reminds you why you spend your time running around pretending to be someone else for a day.
couplingchaos is still finding her confidence as a storyteller, but she's growing by leaps and bounds in that respect. Another few sessions, and she's going to be a force to be reckoned with. Of course, working with the Mighty Dipesa doesn't hurt, as I can attest from the various occasions he and I have worked together. She's going to show up to game one day and fuck all of our heads up, right when we least expect it. Go you, CC.
Of course, growing is what made this game so incredible. All of the PCs in this game are so well thought out, and fully realized. That has lead to some amazing character development and RP. I spent most of my game roleplaying with the other players, and having some really great conversations. But
basha brought the drama to a whole new level when her PC, Kathy, attempted suicide. Holy shit. That was raw, and it was an amazing moment. Everybody was sucked into the scene.
It was an emotionally draining game, in a way I seldom get from a LARP. I think that part of the credit here has to go to the larger aspects of the global game. Trading emails between games with PCs from across the globe, going to large events like Neglect, it adds a new level to the game. In many LARPs I've played in the past, there wasn't much sense of the PCs ever doing anything in the month or two between game sessions. In the Cam, especially in Mage where we're in a larger venue (we're working on getting Mortals to that point, but it'll take time), these characters take on a life of their own, and they're a part of something bigger.
The other part of the credit really needs to go to the amazing skills of the people who play in this game. Everyone makes such human choices. That means mistakes, prejudices, crushes, jealousy, you name it... The dynamic of convenience developing between my PC, Thomas, and the Ecstatic that
futurenurselady plays is really interesting. I have no idea where things are going there, but its a very natural story. It just kind of happens.
Mage kicked my ass in the best possible way. Everyone there rocked like a hurricane.
After crashing in Allston, with Basha and SMC, I woke up to find the city of Boston looking a bit like Atlantis. I contemplated building an arc to get home, but the rain eventually slowed enough for me to make a mad dash for the train.
Finally got home to discover that Boston had a minor shower compared to the homestead. 5 inches of rain today. Suffice it to say that the basement looked like a lagoon. Added a second sump pump to the system, and then spent an hour or so outside adding lengths of PVC piping to the jury-rigged set-up on the other end of the pumps. Finally got it set up so it wasn't springing any leaks, and the water from the basement is being pumped out a good quarter acre from the house.
The water table here is pretty obnoxiously high to begin with, but today was hell. I was wading calf-deep in parts of the backyard. It felt more like walking through a swamp than a lawn. But it had to be done. If the water was emptying anywhere near the house, we'd just keep recycling it in the basement.
Relaxed for a while after that was done, and watched some shitty TV. I also watched some Doggy Fizzle Televizzle, and I think Snoop's new TV show has some potential. The episode on tonight wasn't as good as the pilot that aired a few months back, but it had some nice moments. Fo Shizzle.
Nice cap to my weekend was chatting with
sjc on IM tonight. Pancake, you make me proud to be your friend.
All told, there was a lot of good this weekend. Even the bad wasn't too terrible. I'm left feeling a bit emotionally drained, and my muscles have the ache of a decent workout.
And I'm going to end it by sleeping in as late as I feel like tomorrow.
