After church I decided to go take a cruise in my Camaro since I hadn't driven it since I left in June. As soon as I started her up that old feeling came rushing back to me. It's indescribable. The low rumble of the exhaust and the lope from the cam...there's no mistaking it for any limp-wristed, gutless wonder of a four-banger. I decided to write up a list for my brother and my old man of how to take care of my car while I'm gone. I don't trust them enough to just verbally tell them a few things. Here goes:
Things to do:
- Before starting, check all fluids. Coolant, tranny, oil, maybe even the differential.
- Also check the tire pressure before driving it anywhere.
- Every two weeks start the car and let it run for at least 10 minutes.
- If you decide to drive it, take it easy. Keep the revs under three grand.
- Take it easy when changing gears, too. The tranny mount broke again and I don't want the transmission coming up through the floor.
- When you have to refuel, use only 91 octane. 87 and sometimes even 89 will allow detonation, and then the knock sensor will retard the hell out of the timing, and performance and fuel economy will suffer. Plus if you blow a hole into the top of a piston, you will regret it.
- Take care of my car.
Things not to do:
- Don't run into anything.
- Don't speed.
- Don't put my car into any sort of danger at any time.
- Don't touch my car unless you absolutely have to.
- Don't drive my car if you are imparied in any way.
- Don't perform any kind of repairs. Don't change the starter, don't replace the intake or valve cover gaskets. Just leave it alone.
- Don't drive it very much. I don't want to come back with 100,000 miles on the odometer.
- Don't smoke, eat, or drink in my car.
- Don't talk on a cell phone while driving my car.
- Don't use my car to pick up chicks or to impress your friends.
- Don't run my car into the wall by the garage trying to park it.
- Don't screw up.
I think I covered most of everything. Hopefully it'll be okay. Man, it's gonna be intense coming back and driving my car after being gone for six months. Assuming it's still in one piece...
