You're living (mostly) alone now for the first time that I'm aware of. What impact has an adulthood of living with friends had on you?Well, it's allowed me to be pretty irresponsible with money. Outside that, it's afforded me a lot of opportunities to

Technical: I've stuck with Gentoo partially because it's the first distro I really learned well, and I've since devoted my time to things other than learning another distro. It has a very large software repository, wide architecture support, a very active user community, excellent documentation, and a package management system that appeals to me on several levels. I've messed with Redhat/Fedora in the past, but RPM dependency hell drove me to Gentoo. I realize that's long been fixed with yum, but I really haven't looked back. I generally approve of Sun's approach to open source, but I haven't looked into OpenSolaris in particular. I've never really been a fan of Solaris. Maybe I'm just biased by the keyboards on Sun workstations.
Social, part 1: I actually had a discussion with Pam while we were in Maryland on this subject. She gets a sort of Zen calming experience from being outside near trees, and she likes to share good things with me, so after a long day at work, she would always immediately ask me if I wanted to take the dog for a walk so we could be outside together. I would usually try to turn her down. I finally realized that it's not that I didn't like the walk, it's that I liked having a little time alone after dealing with so many people at work. Pam had been home all day, so she was sick of being alone, so she'd generally leap at me as soon as I returned, which was not what I needed. The upshot is that she would go on the walks without me, and I'd be recharged when she got back. When I'm alone, I generally just like to be at home, put some metal on the stereo, and crank it up.
Social, part 2: Networking events at work. It's a social situation where you're expected to take the time to force social interaction with powerful people at your company! Woo! Nothing says insincerity like walking up to the president if your company, introducing yourself just so they've heard the name, and engaging in stupid small talk for five minutes. I realize it's an effective way to get further in your career, but it's clearly just using people for your own benefit. I'd rather just make my name known through my accomplishments.
Cop-out: Well... I'm in Calgary starting on Sunday, then I'm here for a week working and doing all the last minute stuff to close on the house, then I'm gone for another week and a half, then I'll be moving into the house, then my wedding anniversary... Late July, maybe?
