I left work early tonight because I couldn't take any more of Damaris' incessant babbling. I swear, that girl will just say the first thing that comes into her head. Fortunately, she doesn't actually talk to me, or I would have to feign polite interest, but I still have to hear her babble.
And then she and Katisha started singing. I had to leave. Right then.
So I came home; Carlos and Keith and Lisa and I had been planning to go see if we could grab rush tickets for Urinetown tonight, but it turned out Keith didn't have the money, so we couldn't go.
We still don't have a working phone, so I was considering buying a phone card and calling some people to go out and play. Suddenly the doorbell rang. It was an unexpected appearance by mon frére, Don. He and Alex were apparently under the impression that Carlos' birthday party was this week and not next week, and Don arrived with a gift and non-work clothes to change into (which was fortunate, as he'd just spilled a frappucino on himself).
When Alex arrived, we decided to go see Lilo & Stitch, the new Disney movie. We had about a half hour to kill, so we watched the "Ranma's Calligraphy Challenge" episode of Ranma½, which was highly entertaining. As we were getting ready to leave, Carlos and Keith came home; Carlos got his birthday presents from Don and Alex early (Roxane on DVD and a globular "Barbarella"-style ashtray). I also got my "Real" present from Keith and Carlos- the DVD of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy!!! Woooooo!
Then we were off to the movie. I got a bag o' candy from the "choose your own" selection; I ended up (damn gravity) buying a whole lot more candy than I expected or needed. I like to get a mix of things, and tonight I had M&Ms, Reese's Pieces, Fuzzy Peaches, Chocolate Covered Almonds and Gummi Bearschen. Mmmmm. I still have lots left over. I'm gonna be snacking on candy for days.
The movie was truly amazing. I think it's Disney's best plain (non-computer) animated movie since before they hit the Pocahontas Slump. It's adorable, touching, beautiful & just all-around lovely. The only quibble I had with it was that the Alan Silvestri score sounds a little bit like the Alan Silvestri score for Back to the Future (it has the same opening interval; it's rather déja vu-ish. The rest of the music is great).
I was also amazed to see that one of the voices was performed by Zoe Caldwell, who taught an acting class at my college the year I was there (who taught me nearly everything I know about Shakespeare, and to whom I taught the word "homophobic"), and who my mom saw as Frosine (A woman of intrigue) in The Miser opposite Hume Cronyn years ago (and, more recently, in Terrence McNally's Master Class).
And another voice in the film was done by Kevin McDonald of Kids in the Hall. I love Disney.
It's really an excellent film.
