Forgot to mention during the Super Ball, we saw a couple commercials for the upcoming Land of the Lost movie, which stars Will Ferrell. The first commercial I saw,
carasol said "Marshall, Will, and Holly", and I thought she was pointing out the fact that Will Ferrel played "Marshal Willenholly" in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and what a funny coincidence that was, when in fact, she was just saying the names of the characters. But THEN at the second commercial, she actually DID reference Ferrell's role in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and I was like, "We've already had this conversation". No, we only had it in my head.
Went to see the Invited Dress performance of
The Story of My Life last night. (Link makes music).
carasol came along also.
Very mixed feelings about the show- terrible PR, terrible title (although appropriate, once you see it- PR needs to work on that). Looks like nothing I would enjoy.
I enjoyed it very much. Great performances. Will Chase, after seeing him as Valentin in Spider Woman, now seems to be getting cast as the straight guy gay guys love. Malcolm Gets plays a perfect closeted small-town homo (closeted even to the audience members who can't read between the lines).
I found myself torn between being very moved by the story and clinically, cynically appreciating the elements of the script. It's terribly life-affirming and horribly heart-warming. There was literally a point in the play where I was thinking to myself "this is a little hokey" and simultaneously getting a lump in my throat about what the characters were going through. It's really saved by its absolute, nearly embarrassing, sincerity (much like Our Town, actually).
I got a lot of the jokes before the rest of the audience- that happens to me a lot, being a writer, but here it happened even more than usual. Possibly because the play's about a writer, possibly because of the meticulous conservation of detail in the show.
I have no idea if it will have legs- if they can reach the right audience for it, it might get the life it deserves. I think it probably won't. I imagine it'll be hurt by being on Broadway.
I can see reviews going either way from adoring to putoff.
After the show,
carasol went home, and I met Tony, Peter, Randall and Bill at The Ritz for Blake's new Broadway Night- he wants it to compete with Musical Mondays at Splash, but it's totally not there yet. His main goal is to get actual Broadway Stars to come drink there on their night off, since this bar (unlike Splash) is actually in the theater district.
They played some nice obscure versions of showtunes, including Darius de Haas singing the shit out of "I Am Changing" from Dreamgirls.
Peter, Tony, and Randall left soon after I got there (they'd been to Benihana* and they were tired), but I still had another of my 2-for-1 drinks coming, so I finished that off while chatting with Bill and Blake. Bill's putting in my resume at Lincoln Center- one of the office folks is leaving next month... fingers crossed.
They were talking about going to Woof! the Bear night at The View, but I decided to head over to Marie's instead, for more showtunes. Good nice crowd. There were some of the usual annoying folks there, but they were not as annoying as usual. Ended up staying till about 2:30am, I was having such a nice time.
DH was there, and told me a story about meeting Robert Morse after seeing Tru, and how nice he was to an aspiring young actor from the sticks.
Alan Cumming and a group of friends came in around 1am. We were all very chill about it. Jim went on break, and Alan got behind the piano and sang and played a little number for the people, which I think he wrote himself. Very funny.
* I didn't even know there was a Benihana in NYC!
