Thanks for all the birthday wishes!!!
Happy birthday
zeroshapiro!
And o hai, won
captioncontests again Saturday went to the reading of Bob Ost's show. Eric was not in it after all. Disappointing.
Show was interesting, though too long (3 acts!). And funny because the characters are bitchy, not because funny things happen. And I figured out the big reveal as soon as they began foreshadowing it at the beginning of act 3 (and he thought the twist in The Wastes of Time was predictable?). Have no idea who Eric was to play, since none of the actors were his type. Some nice work, though.
Play ran longer than I'd expected, so I was glad I'd brought my bag with spiNACH dip; skipped out on the talkback and grabbed an A uptown. Sat next to a woman who was reading a playbill. Glanced over and saw Tony's picture, and realized it was from In The Heights. She and her husband had just seen it and loved it.
Then the train miraculously changed to an express from 42nd up to 125th!
Got to
actress_in_nyc's and we went and got supplies for the party, and were ready just in time for people to arrive. Great planning.
jayspec,
carasol, and
planga were the first to arrive, then Ken and Jean (they brought us travel-size games, I got Battleship and
actress_in_nyc got Trouble). Walter came by as well, but he kept spilling wine on things and had to go.
actress_in_nyc's Prince showed up (but did not bring the promised Twin Brother), and then
ceebeegee! I think the rain and other factors kept a lot of people from coming, alas, but it was a nice gathering of good people. We ate and drank and were merry and played Apples to Apples and watched some Marilyn Monroe flicks until around 2am. Apparently, diamonds are very friendly.
Next morning,
actress_in_nyc and I met
carasol for brunch at
Garden Café, which was delightful as usual, though we got caught in the rain on the outdoor patio, which made our umbrellaed table somewhat inaccessible when we needed more coffee.
Then
actress_in_nyc and I went back to her place and played our new games of Battleship and Trouble, and 90s Trivial Pursuit to boot. I actually won them all. Our first game of Battleship was really quite scary, with me randomly guessing correctly- I only had 8 or 9 misses.
actress_in_nyc had been blowing her nose and wasn't feeling well. We took naps, and she had to go puke at some point. So she wan't up to the Tonys party.
I got over to
carasol's, and helped unwrap cheeses and things before the party. A nice crowd there, too-
dry_2olives,
mollyx,
wonderpanther and
walltack,
targemq8 and her mother, James, Mikey, Graeme and Amy.
Quite enjoyed the Tonys.
I just love some Whoopi.
Glad Patti Lupone won, though her clapping along to Rent was weird.
targemq8 said it was like "Who are these kids? When do I get the statue?"
Damn Liza, work those gams!
Did they need to show that painful flashback to LL Cool J and Carol Channing?
Seemed like there was some wacky tobaccky floating around backstage- Duncan Sheik was clearly high. Other people seemed curiously deadpan, so there may have been some downers as well.
In the Heights winning Best Score and Best Musical made me Very Happy. Loved Lin-Manuel's acceptance speech.
And Boeing-Boeing as best revival of a play- So worth it, though Mark Rylance's acceptance speech was bizarre.
Honestly, I didn't care much for A Catered Affair, but it was SO MUCH better than that horrifying performance. Poor Faith Prince. Did they actually make her turn her back on the goddamned orchestra?
I"ll bet if Sondheim had actually been there, he would have rewritten that line in his speech after Lin-Manuel already checked the "Never was a hat" line earlier in the evening. Mandy should have got on the phone to him. Although it's possible he can't use a phone with that beard he has.
I liked that the show this year was "Hey, look what theatre can do!" instead of "We've brought in the pop stars you like to sing things, we're cool, we promise", as it has frequently been in the past.
Rode the subway home with lots of people.
targemq8,
Kohlhaas (not that it's a good name for a girl, either way).
