Plays and Music

Went to Playwrighting group last night- there was a very adorable guy there named Josh, who'd written the first few scenes of a play about the Red Sox World Series victory (in the cast list, it gives name, age, and whether the character is a Red Sox or Yankees fan). Since I was a boy, he naturally had me read, little realizing I don't follow "sports". I think I acquitted myself well- I know who Nomar Garcia-Parra is, since he had a couple guest appearances on "Two Guys and a Girl", and I know that the Jesus-looking guy on the Sox is Matt Damon*, but there was one line I had to say all about RBIs and something else that was just gibberish to me.

Kate was there, and we read an interesting piece by her about two surgeons working on the President-Elect, who had collapsed on Christmas and needed an emergency triple bypass. They're being guarded by a Secret Service man. Neat stuff.

We read my revised 3-girl one-act, and though I liked some of the new additions, one of the transitions at the end was just awful, and I need to fix that- I didn't realize when I wrote it; it's good to have people read the stuff out loud. Tesse kept cracking up trying to read Lisa's monologue about running away from home as a child- "So one morning I woke up really early? and I packed a little bag with some clothes and my My Little Pony and a banana, and just left the house".

We talked about awful Shakespeare adaptations we've seen- that terrible FAU "Romeo and Juliet" has served me with great stories for years.

Afterward, Tesse and I headed over to Birdland for Jim Caruso's Cast Party , which was highly enjoyable- I'd never been before.
Tesse is trying to engineer a comeback for Champagne Cocktails, so I had one of those- I don't really like champagne, so unsurprisingly I didn't much care for it. (and, anyway, that's what hookers drink).
Most of the performers were very good, except one girl who sang "Defying Gravity" - the only people who should be allowed to sing that are Idina, wonderpanther, and defy_gravity99. Jim Caruso agrees with Rachel that every song should end with an "AaAahhhhhh!".

* just kidding- I'm not totally clueless- I know it was Damon Wayans.
