Oh, Kin. I don't know whether to be celebrating such a beautiful ending or mourning the fact that it is finished.
A wonderful ending to a wonderful fic.
For one brief moment, he hated them all, hated their careless rejection of this man who did not deserve to be rejected.
Yes, that sums up how I feel so often about Brian's "friends".
(Maybe it also explains how I feel about certain R/L people as well.)
What I love most about this fic (and its predecesssor) is that your Justin sees all of Brian's flaws; he doesn't pull a Michael or a Lindsay - pretending to "love him anyway", he challenges Brian when he's being a dick but he also truly accepts him. He knows Brian is never going to be the easy comfortable option, but he also recognises that he isn't either.
And he values the difficult facets of Brian's character, and, for that matter, of his own. That's why, just like he said way back when, he's "the most mature person" Brian knows.
Oh, thanks, Wren! *shakes head* I can't believe how long it took me to finish it. I think from now on, I'll finish fics before posting them. IMO, Deb and Michael did love Brian, each in their own warped way. But I feel that their love was not only conditional, their relationship w/ him was more dysfunctionally symbiotic (if that makes any sense).
One thing I wanted to show in this was Justin's strength and how he had grown. I hope that came across.
Again, thank you for your lovely comment. I truly appreciate it!
Yes, your comment about their relationship definitely makes sense.
I agree that they did both love him, in their own warped ways. But I also think that they (Lindsay in particular) enjoyed playing the martyr in the relationship, enjoyed feeling some kind of sense of superiority because they were so warm-hearted and unselfish they were able to love poor broken Brian who just wasn't capable of loving them back - whereas I believe just the opposite was true; they were the ones who were almost entirely selfish and self-seeking where Brian was concerned. (And seriously, I could be roused to actual physical violence by a Mikey-lover insisting on how Brian took advantage of poor Mikey and led him on all those years!)
