So we're back from winter war, which was an alright event.
But the big news would be that on Saturday of the event we did a bit of shopping in Radcliffe, specifically went trolling Pawn shops, since given the proximity of a few military bases were prevelant. In the first pawn shop we went in they had probably 10-12 guitars, both Acoustics and electics. Now I have wanted a guitar for years. I can't play but have always wanted to learn. And in the last month or so had begun to be shown a few chords etc. We had even been into most of the local guitar stores to see what was available new.
So were in shop number one, looking over the selection. Some of the guitars are beat up, but they have a 12 string Yahama for sale. It's acuostic(I have been advised to learn on an acuostic six string, even though the idea of a 12 string has always fascinated me. So we look over the yamaha, It's missing most of it's strings(it has five on it in the shop) and a chip missing from the sound hole. But I'm looking for a guitar to learn on so it doesn't seem like too bad a deal, and it could be strung as a six string to learn on, then have the extra strings added once I got the basics. It doesn't seem like a bad idea, but we decide to think about it for a bit.
Moving down the street we hit the second pawn shop. I start out looking at the tools to see if they have anything interesting while I think Alicia went strait to the guitars. when I finish looking at the tools, I go over and look at the display rack of guitars they have for sale. There are some ok guitars there, but nothing that stands out. Then I turn around, and sitting on the counter, having just been tuned, is an ovation 12 string guitar. It's beautiful, and I check the price, expecting it to be way out of my price range. And it wasn't. I call alicia over for her opinion(since I've never bought a guitar) and she agrees that it's a very nice guitar. I strum it a couple of times and it makes a gorgeous sound(later it's pointed out that it was just tuned, but still at the time it was really cool) It's an acoustic electric though the electronics are not working(hence the low price) and there was no way I could have found a better deal. And my loving wife buys me a guitar, two states away from home. I love my wife. She understands and puts up with my bizarre behavior.
So I am now the very proud owner of an Ovation 12 string. And I have already discovered the interesting joy of an 12 string is it brings out the curiousity in those people who do play guitar. On Sunday of the event when we were waiting for everything to be ready to leave, we ended up siting in the lobby of the inn With Raven, and Othium. Raven was just getting back into guitar and he played a bit on it before it was passed to othium. It seems Othium has owned a 12 before and he certainly knew how to play it. Alicia reports that I was apparently all moon faced watching my guitar being played, but I will say that It just sounds damn cool.
So now I have to actually learn to play, and yeah, starting on a 12 string may not be the easiest way to go, but I figure if I can learn on the 12, then a six string won't be much of an adjustment. Besdies, if I learn on a 12 and can't adjust to a six, well I own a twelve so that kind of works out. So tonight and A&S I sat down and made a conscious effort to begin learning more chords than the G I knewfrom the last few demonstrations. At this moment, I have A pretty good and C is OK(though my fingers don't completely agree with that) I've been shown a few other chords, but those haven't sunk in yet. Hopefully with a bit more studdy I'll have at least the seven major chords learned, and then cam move to learning transistion from one chord to the next, as well as some key "alternate" chords(Minors, and sevenths, etc)
So yeah, kick ass guitar and a new trying to make it sound good. And the guitar already has a great story to her. Now she just needs a name.
