This is my favorite so far. And not just because I've had this scene pictured in my mind of Mai killing Long Feng when he tries to assassinate Zuko. Everything was great: - the opening line is lyrical and just mysterious enough to require a second reading after a few lines to understand what it means - Mai having mixed feelings about Azula's fate, keeping in mind they were some kind of friend - Mai knowing she was the trigger of Azula's breakdown and actually feeling guilty - Zuko made her name sound like a charm, something to be cherished and held close to your heart. And "on days like this, however, she wished he wouldn't exploit that weakness. It reminded her too much of his younger sister." was a nice touch to that. - "I played the doll for my parents. I played the loyal sidekick for your sister. Let me be me for you." Although I don't think there would ever be a question of Zuko doubting Mai's capabilities or denying her warrior-ness. Mai: I don't need any protection. Zuko: Hah, believe me, she doesn't...
I also picture Mai as Zuko's bodyguard in this time, so it makes sense to me that she'd be digging so deeply for his safety. Like I said, best fic here yet.
